I recomend P.D. James', "The Children of Men." It's being made into a movie, and who knows if it'll be any good... but the book is damn good.
Her ability to breakdown characters is incredible. The dialogue is delicious.
Quoting an early review of the movie
"It's got a little Clockwork Orange in it. A little 28 Days Later. A little bit of The Wall. A little Blade Runner. And a whole lot of **insert war documentary here.**"
And... I found Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" to be great.
