I've always wanted to be a game dev. The truth is, tho, that i SUCK. I know NOTHING about code. I'm lost. I can't even get a simple Suse Linux os installed on an old laptop (supposedly an easy task, according to the dudes at compusa). o well. guess i'll have start back @ square 1 and rethink my life...*sob*

Everybody sucks before they don't. That's life. Keep trying. And don't do drugs. Mostly.

Words of wisdom:

1) You can make a game. You just require patience. Start with Rysen's Tutorial.
2) The dudes at CompUSA are paid to LIE. And never
3) the only time you should use @ as 'at' is in email addresses and in hastily scrawled notes on fridge doors.

Keep these three axioms close to heart, and you will go far. Maybe as far as the 7-11. Get a slushie for yourself as a reward if you make it!

I recommend Slackware Linux for old computers. And if you have a Zip drive, that really helps too. Especially because my old Toshiba Satellite from 1994 didn't have a CD-ROM drive.

So, you know, Slackware Linux has a pretty simple install. It's just a lot of stuff to download.

As for programming, go play some games that inspired you. Then, if you want to remember how fun programming _was_, go pull out your old Atari.

I had Suse Linux for a while. Then I accidentally broke it. Fiddled with the graphics card options a little and *poof*! Buggered. Now WinXP might not be the greatest OS ever but at least it screams at me if I'm generally about to screw something up.

Er, anyway. I sucked at coding for a while. Then, one day something finally clicked and it finally started making sense. Since VERGE uses C as a basis for its scripting language, I'd also suggest - other than following the highly useful tutorials on this site - that you take a look at some C tutorials too. I've been reading through the book 'C++ For Dummies' lately and I'm even learning things from THAT that are applicable with VC.

You'll think for quite a time that C is punishment from the very bowels of hell, but after a while you'll realise that it's just misunderstood and is actually quite a nice programming language really. Well, nicer that BASIC. Grr.
