Infinitium Labs. Phantom console. Phantom service delivers games direct on-demand to your home via braodband.

Buy console, buy the service. Download any and every bloody game you ever want that is PC/WinXP compatible.

Yeah, it's probably doomed to failure, but paying $40.00 to receive any computer game, with mods, and multiplayer capabilities, is so tempting.

Try Googling it.

NO NO NO!

This is not a console, its a PC in a small box. The guys behind it are verging on the unscrupulous too. www.penny-arcade.com had a field day on this one, several in fact. I don't trust the Phantom as far as I can throw it and, more importantly, if you want a PC you should buy a PC.

BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT...

Forty dollars for all the PC games you can play? So...tempting...

It doesn't work quite like that... my understanding is that you pay a monthly fee for subscription to their service, which includes an "ever-expanding" package of games. Games not in that package, you can rent/buy for (I imagine) relatively normal retail prices.

So basically, I'm pretty certain that you still have to pay for all your games, it's just that you don't actually have to go "outside" for it, you can just download them all onto the Phantom. And then play them on your crap-resolution TV. With their silly keyboard/mouse combo controller.

Yeah.

Except that the Phantom will more likely than not never ever exist.

Supposedly it's being released this fall or something. But you know, I hear that the earth will open and the dead will walk the earth sometime too.

Any bets on which comes first?

Some HardOCP pictures of the Infinium Labs area shows that they actually printed signs that correspond to the stuff in the strip.

From what I heard and read, the $40 gives you only access to some basic games. Probably some flashgames like the Yeti series.
If you want a "real" game, you have to pay extra for it. It's like valves Steam, only more expensive.

This whole affair sounds to me like a scam. Present a good sounding idea to IT-unsavvy, potential investor, grab the money, live a good live until the whole thing bombs, then declare bankrupty and say it was all the fault of the bad press.

Of course, I could be totally wrong and the Phantom console is the best thing since mankind invented sex with a orgasm.

I can see how it might be hard to co-ordinate the two.
