Does anyone here have experience working with Pro Tools and/or any music recording software in general? I purchased a M-Box a short while back, and I've been using it with Pro Tools to record some of my music. I'm having some weird issues with some of the plugins for sends, as well as bouncing to disk problems (the handler can't keep up and my machine is pretty fast with SATA).

Also, I'm just trying to understand some of the basic concepts behind music multi-track music recording, like what does it mean to print an audio track that's been bussed to an aux track? Where do the sends occur in the processing of the audio? What's the best way to get rid of "clicks" in audio? etc

So, if anyone has any kind of experience in this stuff and cares to help me, please post and let me know so I can hit you up with all sorts of stupid questions.

Whoa, actually, my step dad has a studio in our house, and we have LOADS of Pro-Tools stuff (all this awesome expensive equipment and stuff). I might start getting payed to do some engineering for him and stuff, becuase I really need the practice with recording if I'm to do game music as a career. If I can learn more about this stuff, I'll share whatever knowledge I accrue with you.

Awesome! That's very cool you're gonna get paid to do that. Sweet! Got a link to any of the stuff your step dad has done?

Okay, maybe you can help me with some stuff. First of all, I'm using Pro Tools TDM, which is the version of Pro Tools that comes with the M-Box, version 6.4 under Windows XP. My computer is an Athlon 3000 w/ 1gig of RAM, and a 10,000 RPM 133 SATA drive w/ 4 megs of cache.

I believe TDM is the same as normal Pro Tools, except that you're limited to 24 tracks or something like this, which is fine for my purposes.

I'm trying to use the included Amplitude plugin add distortion to my guitar (it's just so much more flexible than my amp), but every time I quit out of Pro Tools, I lose all my settings. I don't have this problem with other plugins.

Also, when I try to bounce a 10 track song to disk, I get an error about the bounce handler not being able to keep up. Is there anything I can do to solve this? 10 tracks doesn't seem like that much.

Anyway, thanks for the help, whether or not you know the answers. I've got many more questions, but I don't want to flood you with them all now.

Most of my music is pretty shitty, it's kind of embaressing to let people listen to it, just because I've still got a lot to learn. You can hear the latest song I finished (well, almost, still no bass line) here: http://www.verge-rpg.com/~loretian/shadows_in_the_night.mp3. My mic sucks, I haven't bought a decent one yet, I think that's why the vocals are so bad.

Hey Lore,

My best friend has his own recording studio, and works part time in a local (but fairly popular) one. He's extremely knowledgable in this stuff, and I have recorded many times with him myself. He's very good at what he does.

In any event, I've sent him an e-mail asking about the things you were curious about, so hopefully I'll hear from him soon and let you know what he has to say.

Here's a link to his site which shows a couple of things he's done, if you're curious. I'm even playing in one of them! :D (I played bass for "A Day in the Life of a Fool")

Click Me

Edit: I should also mention, especially after downloading your mp3 (cool song btw! I was really impressed with the guitar tone!) that he doesn't *just* record the jazzy/pop stuff on his sight, he's actually got a couple of rock and metal(like realy heavy stuff) clients that he records frequently. So, yeah, he handles *all* types of music, just in case it was given off that he only did that style. :P

I like your song Lore! Kind of different from what I'd expect from a GnR fan though. :) Be sure to post it again when you've got that bass in.
What guitar are you playing (I presume it's you playing)? Sounds kind of like a strat only not quite...

In an MSN conversation with aformentioned friend right now:

wes says:
what does it mean to print an audio track thats been bussed to an aux track?
wes says:
I need more info of the context that he's doing that in

wes says:
the way sends work are, if he decides to use reverb, he will "send" a portion of the guitar or vocals or whatever to the reverb. the amount of reverb you get depends on how much signal from the guitar or vocal you "send" to that effect

wes says:
if there are clicks in your recordings the only way to fix them is to redraw the waveform, which sometimes doesn't work. if you are getting them during recording onto a computer then you may want to get a computer dedicated only to audio

But he also told me that if you wanted some clarification or if you wanted to ask more questions, etc. that you can e-mail him at:

mr_tomato1AThotmailDAWT.com

He's a really busy person so I can't guaruntee a reply right away, or anything, but I know he'll try and help when/if he can. :) If not, there are sites out there that have forums dedicated to this sort of stuff. I can't name any off the top of my head, but I'm sure a quick google search will lead you to one. :)

You just ressurrected a 2 year dead thread?

This is real, right? And not a mistake caused by my earlier database merging?

Yeah, listen to the song, give me some feedback :)

I figured it'd be better to use the existing thread rather than start a new one.

Say - that's pretty good shit!!!

My only remark is that during the 1st voice/guitar solo the guitar kind of distracted me from the lyrics - but that's from my laptop speakers.

Edit: Again, another personal thing - is that you might want to add 3 or 7 more bars to your intro before the lyrics -

Thanks for listening and for the comments, I appreciate it!

I am working on tweaking the vocals with the guitar so they blend a little better.

I have 20+ other songs, but I think this is the best one by far. I'm trying to crank out a couple more songs of this quality level in the next couple weeks, I will post them when they're done.
