I have a couple guitars and keyboard that I've been trying to plug into the computer. But after spending a good while looking online, I can't find any 1/4" to USB cords or some kind of sound card. Anyone help me out here?

There is no such thing as a 1/4" to USB, since audio cables and USB cables do not contain the same kind of data at all.

Any half-decent computer should have a sound card, whether it's on board or not; the basic ones should have a Mic in or Line in jack, or both, in 1/8" format.

There are plenty of cheap 1/4" to 1/8" converters that will get you there. If you have both Mic in and Line in, Line in will usually be the better choice because it won't distort your signal.

That will do the job for anything basic. If you get more serious about it, get a Firewire or USB 2 audio interface which will come with 1/4" and/or XLR jacks and will sound much better... at a cost, of course.

Oh, thanks for that. I wasn't sure about the USB thing, since you can run just about anything on that these days.

My computer does have a sound card with Mic and Line in, but from what I did find, using those lines greatly degrades your signal. I was thinking there was a sound card with a 1/4" jack built in.

Either way, it's gonna cost more than a pretty penny, so it sounds like just using the converter will be the most likely route.

I don't suppose there's any kind of cheap recorder that can be brought to the computer and downloaded there? Eh, I'll look into it on my own time. Thanks again anyway.

Well, update to my little situation. Went to radioshack and got a $5 piece that converts the 1/4" to 1/8" to use in my mic jack. Fiddled for a bit and found a small piece of software and everything records clean. At least, clean enough for me.

And the software is All Sound Recorder XP for anyone else who doesnt have a clue.
