I'm wondering if any of you musician types are familiar with any MIDI software - I know VERGErs tend to be trackers, not really interested in MIDI too much.

I don't really need to be able to edit them so much, I mostly want to be able to view the tracks and notations and such.

Is there any freeware software that would work? Or, what rediculously expensive software that I could contact my cousin Juarez about would work best? :D

I don't know of any freeware off the top of my head that'll do what you want, though I'm sure it's out there. Basically *any* good notation software will import midi's and let you view the tracks and notations.

Personally I use Finale 2002 for notation stuff, which does a really good job when importing midi's, but it'd be a pretty expensive buy for just wanting to view a midi. (I think your cousin would help you with the funds, though.) Finale Notepad *is* free, but it doesn't import midi's.

I have used "noteworthy composer" a few times for diddlin' with sheet music. It is like Typing the music, and will open MIDIs in sheet music format for easy reading.

Um, thing is, there's a few restrictions on the evaluation version, but they're lax enough that an enterprising musicker like one such as myself can get around them.

Goo ruck!

Isn't Cakewalk one of the best (i.e. most expensive) midi sequencers available? Also, there is Cubase.

Yeah, Cakewalk is definately good. I think Cubase is better, but I'm not sure. Either way, you are looking at spending some pretty good cash. Also, isn't Reason one of those things? Maybe not, I don't do MIDI...

3) TiMidity (I use this free program for playing M.I.D.I. music files; its Tracer panel is good for viewing the tracks, and TiMidity may display comments, lyrics, and so forth; it loads SoundFonts). My TiMidity configuration is as follows: I have all effects, tweaks, and special options turned off for a clean sound. My TiMidity configuration follows: all GM/GS/XG options but Insertion Effect Control checked; all special options unchecked; play parameter maximum voices set to 256, amplification set to 40%, antialiasing instrument checked, load instruments while playing unchecked, unload intsruments between files checked, auto reduction voice unchecked; default M.I.D.I. type clicked to G.S.; all musical grammar options unchecked; resample cache parameter set to 2097152, default tonebank parameter set to 0; all tonebank unchecked, control ratio parameter 0, trace playing checked, console verbosity parameter 2, drum power(%) parameter 100, amplitude compensation unchecked. 4) Papelmedia Premium version SoundFont is now selling for ~$55 including shipping. It is the General M.I.D.I., and General Synthesis SoundFont I use with M.I.D.I. music files. I have in use a two-gigahertz Pentium 4 that has one gigabyte R.A.M. installed.
