MIDI has its advantages, foremost in size, so why not? Lots of indie scene types use MIDI, particularly if their aims are all-audiences and non-gamers. The two benefits there are that it lowers system requirements slightly and decreases download size. Since a lot of their targets are modem-users, that's a bonus.

The reason VERGE has always focused on mods is for the consistency of sound across different sound cards and the relative ease of tracking due to its specific form of presentation. If MIDI apps were geared towards musicians-turned-nerds, trackers are geared towards nerds-turned-musicians.
