MIDI has its advantages, foremost in size, so why not? Tracking is probably always prioritized but here we are in a wonderful world of opportunities and choices, though if we settle for nothing now, we'll settle for nothing later. if we don't take action now, we'll settle for nothing later! yes, i dwell in verge, but it's a verge that i can grip.. i tried to grip my balls, but i slipped.. to escape from mcgrue and an existance so cruel, I've got a 9, a sign, a set AND NOW I'VE GOT A NAME!

Lots of indie scene types use MIDI, particularly if their aims are all-audiences and non-gamers. The two benefits there are that it lowers system requirements slightly and decreases download size. Since a lot of their targets are modem-users, that's a bonus.
The reason VERGE has always focused on mods is for the consistency of sound across different sound cards and the relative ease of tracking due to its specific form of presentation. If MIDI apps were geared towards musicians-turned-nerds, trackers are geared towards nerds-turned-musicians.
