Ok, ok, so I know you have to use some sort of equipment to transfer music from real life into digital information. But since I'm a super bum, I got to ask this:

Is there any way to create music on the computer without using any sort of equipment other than the computer itself?

Why yes. Yes there is, and that method is the same method used to create a majority of the music you find in Verge games.

Have you heard of 'tracking' software? The basic gist of it is to use recorded samples (wav files, etc) of instruments (and other sounds) to create music without having to buy all that fancy midi equipment. The tracker can be downloaded for free, and samples can be found in a variety of different places. (Also for free, if you look hard enough, or learn about 'ripping'.)

If you're interested I'd seriously check out The Tracker's Handbook which is a really great place to start.

And if you're curious as to which tracker to download, I'd suggest ModPlug Tracker.

I hope that helps!

1. Type some stuff in a text file.
2. Rename the file .mp3.
3. You're done!

4. Include the music in your game, Milk.

FruityLoops is a good tool. It's not the best thing in the world, but it's extremely easy to use and get the hang off, and is loaded with sounds and FX. You can download a free demo, and they've got lots of tutorials on the website, so I strongly recomend checking it out. FruityLoops!

Thanks for all the suggestions...
But I went with Rysen's because I saw his first.
Anyways, I tracked something random for you to chew on. I hope you enjoy it. And yes, I do know about 'ripping'. (^_^X)

Thanks for the compliment...
But I thought that as a veteran tracker, you would offer some criticism.
Wow... I'm good... =D

Nah. Unfortunately, I don't really have time these days to write reviews for every song I hear. I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed your song, and if that's your first attempt, it's very impressive. :)

Darn it, that's good. I'm jealous :)

I can't quite say what's so neat about it or what kind of feeling it would be best for, but the composition is definitely good. I like the part around 1:30 where it starts some kind of resolution for the final minute.

Come to think of it, I've got something lingering on the edge of my mind. If you like composing music for set scenes or emotions, then this is definitely awesome for that, too. ...Some kind of tense scene, at first.

Anyway, good job. I like the harp. I also like the last few notes leading up to the ending flourish of the song. Those notes...sound neat.

Thanks for all your compliments.
To tell the truth, I don't understand it either. I just took whatever note I feel like putting in there, and I put it in there.
At 1:30, I just got lazy and did one instrument. =D
I kept it that way, because I think solos are cool.

I would say this portrays whatever current feeling I felt when I was composing the piece at the moment. And I composed it 20 ticks or so at a time, with online gaming, programming, real life, and all that good stuff in between.

Well, I've listened to it too and I must say I'm also impressed. It sounds terrific for a first try. My only criticism would be that - due to you simply putting 'whatever note I feel like' as you went throught the tune - it does sound wildly uninspired. A little planning in advance and some practice tapping out a few melodies and you'll be DANGEROUS.

Yeah, some moments sort of hiccuped and was not in-sync with the rest of the music. I noted some of these points:
0.44
1.08
1.32
2.08

It's not a big deal though, since the whole thing was generally massively awesome. Very epic. :)

Yea um big props for the music. It is to often the temptation to stay in the same place with this type of song or do the intro, main part, break, main part 2, and then end formula. This had thought out structure

I do have a few other choice words to say though that have nothing to do with that last song.

One: Buzz Machines is a free music making program in the same vain as fruity loops and seems to be set up in a similar way as old Mod files were at least in concept.

Two:Mov file is said in the FAQ were not supported by Verg.

&Three: So where DO I get programs that make music the Verge can take????

My Answers.

1. Cool, but I'm using ModPlug. Still, I guess people new should check out Buzz Machines.

2. Yeah, MOV files are not supported. Figure out other methods of cinema, like in Ninja Gaiden on NES.... oh man, that was a effing sweet game... Or, you can use an AVI, buut... let's not.

3. ModPlug tracker. Or many other trackers. Or MP3s. Or WAVs. Or a microphone, (but you better play your instrument well, or be a singer). Lot's of stuff. Thank the lord for FMOD.

Those Ninja Gaiden cinemas on NES were GHETTO FABULOUS and beyond! Man those were good.
