I was wondering if anyone has any advice for making tiles for tree foliage. I'm doing them in Photoshop and then importing in Maped. The main problem I've had with it is making something that looks decent and will tile indefinitely. I had some pretty decent foliage in the last version of my old Vortex game, but that was in 320x240, and the blurriness of that resolution really helped. I'm doing these for a game running in 640x480, which means there's a lot more detail.
I like the tree foliage in FF5 the best, and would like to aim for something similar (though still my own work), at the higher resolution. Basically, I want there to be visibly separate leaves around the edges, with the leaves getting darker towards the middle until there is just blackness. Everything I've tried has come out either looking pretty awful, or else it doesn't tile well.
Ack, I'm not really even sure how someone could offer my advice on this. It's kind of like asking "How do you draw?"
Argh. Believe it or not, I once saw a really good tutorial on how to duplicate the trees from Seiken Densetsu 3. I can recall a lot of the advice, but it would probably be better if I could find that tutorial...
Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
