I doubt you actually NEED a challenge... but if you do, I've got one for you! (:

I've recently been on a nostalgia kick, which led me to think of one of the best multiplayer games in history: ARCHON.

Now, for those of you who don't know, Archon is kinda like chess, and kinda like Star Control (with mythological creatures instead of spaceships). (: It's definitely one of history's forgotten classic games, as it's never made its way onto any next-gen console or computer platform, and it probably never will. The two most recent releases of it were a fairly nice (but true to the original) release for NES, and a super-updated version of the game for DOS called "Archon Ultra" (which won't run at all under WinME or above). Archon Ultra is actually pretty dang sweet (and you can download it at http://www.theunderdogs.org, and you can find my teensy weensy little FAQ/instructions for it on GameFAQs.com), but the problem is, it's super low-res, and REALLY guzzles your computer's resources.

Anyhoo, I thought back to all the many non-RPGs people had made in VERGE so far, and thought what a WONDERFUL IDEA it might be if someone might perhaps want to create a brand new version of Archon using VERGE (it might make a pretty good 72 HoV contest entry for the more skilled VERGErs, like Zaratustra and such!).

Just a thought. Ho-hum (twiddles fingers). (:

...another possibility might be an updated version of the old NES game "Spy vs. Spy". It was pretty dang cool too, but very very short. An updated version with more in it (and perhaps some randomized rooms or item placements) might do wonders.

Just ANOTHER thought. (: Ho-hum (twiddles fingers). (:

I have Archon Ultra, plays great.

I also have the original for my commodore Amiga, but my computer was to advanced (???) for it.

Mine is running Windows ME, which CANNOT be rebooted into DOS mode (for me, anyway), so Archon Ultra refuses to run (it locks up my computer when I try).

I miss Windows 98... I'm thinking of backing up everything I've got, reformatting my HD, and reinstalling Win98... 'cause damn, half the stuff I use on a regular basis consists of old DOS programs that either don't run or don't run well under any version of Windows past 98.

Stupid Microsoft, not being compatible with itself...

...I dunno if it was the same game or not. There were lots of rumors about a sequel in the works, too, that was supposed to take place outdoors on an island. Might've been for Game Boy, I don't remember. It looked awesome, but I've never heard of it since its original announcement, nor have I ever talked to anyone who played it. Not even sure it was ever released.

I wanna play that and Archon II now. (: I read the Archon II FAQ on GameFAQs, and it doesn't sound as cool as Archon I, but it still sounds cool. (:

I think Archon Ultra has something we can use to play over TCP/IP... might need some extra utils or something.

If you don't know
Marble Madness was a ported arcade game, I played it on the Commodore Amiga. Great game, a sequel was planned (Called Marble Brothers) but never released.

I think it only has modem support (and pretty awful modem support, at that)... but hey, if it DOES have TCP/IP support, you're on!! (:

Oh heck yeah!

I remember Archon... My absolute favorite game long ago, with Mail Order Monsters, Lode Runner, and Space Taxi in there somewhere.

I always lost, though. I think it was due to my favoritism towards the Shapeshifter...

As for Archon 2, as I recall, it had a number of improvements over Archon 1, but just wasn't quite as fun, though that still leaves it as a great game.

Now if I could just remember which piece from those two had the remote-control shots, that I found out about by accident...

I once had a utility that would emulate LAN out of TCP/IP, that way games that wanted IPX could be fooled into playing online.

Maybe theres such a utility for modems?
aha! found some
search 'Virtual Modems'
---------------------------
COM/IP - Tactical Software
(20 day trial)
NetModem - Allen Software Technologies
(Netmodem/16 is Freeware)
---------------------------

So yeah, if you do go back, post and we can try out those utils and see if we can't get a game going.

I had Spy Vs Spy II on the Commodore 64. It was set on a desert island.

Remote control shots? Err, I don't think that was Archon 1... even Archon Ultra doesn't have that. (:

The Shapeshifter is good, but I actually don't use it very often, because it's only as good as whatever it's attacking, and if you catch it on the wrong-colored square, you can make pretty quick work of it (it's almost degrading to lose a Shapeshifter to a Knight!!). (: Shapeshifter/Phoenix battles, too, are always a pain, and sooooo unpredictable!!

I've always liked the Dragon/Djinni, especially the Dragon in Archon Ultra. The only real downside to Archon Ultra's Dragon is that it can be killed by the Knight fairly easily (just get underneath it, and it's as good as dead!)... but that's still kinda cool, 'cause they finally found a use for the Knight! (Goblin too, who's great at killing the Djinni!!). (:

Yeah, it was pretty neat. Best fun in two player mode. I've only played the original game once or twice but I think gameplay-wise the two were quite similar. There's a poor screenshot up at

Forsaken, perhaps, but trash, no. XP is a great OS, probably the best that Microsoft has ever put out (with the exception of DOS, perhaps ^_^).
