This isn't just another newbie being dumb. Or at the very least, not another newbie being careless. I've been trying as best I can to get some version of verge2 set up and working but every attempt meets with varying degrees of failure.

First I tried the newest thing listed on the news page, figuring the newest version is probably a good place to start, but this came up with some very strange stuff. Trying to run either vcc or maped results in errors asking for dos4gw.exe. I can copy that in from some old dos program or another and kinda hotwire things into working (C:\dos4gw vcc system) but even doing that and attempting to follow the tutorials I still can't get the thing running. I even found a post around here somewhere describing the new version of the user.cfg, as opposed to the one in the tutorials, and used that. Didn't help.

So, admitting defeat, I tried to find an older version of Verge2 that would comply with the tutorials, hoping that would help, but alot of the file links seem to be just plain broken.

As a side note, verge1 sets up and runs perfectly well, but being the spoiled artist that I am I hate the idea of cramming my poor images into that kind of setup =/

So anyway, I guess my request would be for someone to either explain a good way to get set up, or direct me to the right documentation and files, because I'm hitting all sorts of dead ends trying this on my own.

You need to put a copy of dos4gw.exe into your windows directory. Yes, verge downloads sometimes assume you know some things.

Guess I just never got enough experience with dos or something, was so long ago. That solved the problem it looks like, didn't think it was a big thing but I guess it was. I'm off and running, already managed to get enough graphics for one whole character and code a simple dialog/textbox system. We'll see if I come up with anything good ^^.

Now if only I could figure out how to work with the buttons, but thats another question entirely.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
