Or something like that. ;p This is more a question to anyone who can help me find an old V1 battle system, long since disposed of in people's archives, it looks like. Sheng Long Grendalla (SP? Sorry if I mispelled the name) had a battle engine for V1 that had Vecna, himself, and Sasha I believe in a small trial battle, but the thing that was useful about this, and what I wanted to find specifically, was a timing algorithm he put in for Sasha's "leaping", that was pixil-by-pixil as opposed to a CHR movement. If anyone knows about this file or this demo, or maybe has it in a relic, I'd love an email, post, or reply.

Now, the reason I am interested in this is, my ongoing project, Lucid Soul has been coming along great, if only for a 1-man effort, but I'm kind of "out-of-date" when it comes to programming again, so I decided to rekindle the flame of Rune's Edge with a new flavor and character design using the V1 engine to get back into programming. FF3-style chars aren't too outdated, even if they do all tend to look the same, but for a hentai-RPG-Strategy game the animation would be a breeze leaving mainly the code to tackle. So, just a little glimpse into the workings of someone who hasn't really released anything in the community yet, just been around for a long time.

Also, if anyone knows where to find tutorials/documents/FAQs written about "hacking" V1's commands so that you can customize the menu system, add keys and their purposes, and such, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again all, and good luck on your own projects.

...in regards to your last question, about hacking V1 to customize the menu and such: do you know basic C++? If so, you really just need to download the V1 source code and study it for a half-hour or so, and you should be able to figure out exactly what you need to do to customize it... one thing I can definitely say about vecna is he really knew how to make his code human-readable -- a trick I have yet to learn. (: A lot of people were surprised that I actually followed through with my promise for V1+ back in the day, but truth be told, it was EXTREMELY easy to make, because the V1 source code really doesn't use very difficult C. (:

If you don't know C++... well, then I guess I was pretty much no help at all. (: Sorry!

HOLY SHIT ITS WYRDWAD

...
Hey dude! ^_~

So. The V1 sourcecode is readable? Well, I suppose I'll take that as probably the only compliment that the V1 code is worth receiving. Now, the recent winv2 codebase is much more... proper code.

What you up to these days, anyway?

It's on my computer at home. Just let me get a hold of someone there and have them send it to me, and I'll get it to you ASAP.

If you ever played Warsong or Der Langrisser (with 68% or so translation patch) for SNES, the battle system flings the guys back towards the edge of the screen when they are 'eliminated'. Since this is the strategy game mold for my V1 trial, that particular leaping effect would prove useful to figuring out such an algorithm. Thanks a bunch!

And that's the truth, it never really occurred to me to check the actual source code of the V1 engine. My only concern is, I've been a Computer Science major at UNLV for a while, so C++ is something I've been taking for 4 years since high school now, but in truth, I've never dealt with the graphical aspects or any graphical coding in C++, which is why I wanted to find an engine like VERGE to do my games. So my real worry is, is there anything in the code that would be 'out of the ordinary' so to speak from the usual "cout", "string", "array", etc. code you get drilled on in school day after day? If the graphical aspect is dealt with on exterior plugins or something that the code accesses, I probably wouldn't be that worried about diving on in and trying it out, just a thought though.

Especially since he posted a few posts down :).

But ya, Wyrdwad, it's great to see old faces around. Sheesh, you were here before me. I'd love to get demos to your game as you finish them.

. . . I sent the battle system to you via the email button. If you need me to send it somewhere else, just say so. Hope I've helped!

Wow... I wasn't expecting a "holy shit"... I was expecting more of an "oh crap". (:

Heheheheh... anyhoo, check my post about 2 or 3 topics down from this ("I'm back, and I bring a PLOT SUMMARY!" or some such thing) for details on what brings me back to the VERGE community... as for what's going on in my life, I've now graduated from college, and am assistant-teaching English at two junior high schools in Shichigahama-machi, Miyagi-ken, Japan (a tiny seacost village with practically nothing in it, but very near Sendai, which is like, the COOLEST city in the WORLD). (: Well, and I'm tutoring a couple elementary school kids on the side, but shhh, that part's a secret! (:

If you have any interest in Japan at all, I definitely recommend the JET program, which is what I'm on... not only is it kinda fun and rewarding, but it's also NOT hard work AT ALL, and you get paid a butt-ton of money for it, which is why I now have PS2s from two countries. (:

Thanks for asking about me, BTW -- it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Or maybe that's some sort of undiagnosed medical condition... but either way, thanks. (:

The graphical routines in V1 are, to the best of my recollection, handled by commands from a library which closely resemble their VergeC counterparts. (: I may be mistaken, but I've had very little formal training in C++ (mostly self-taught, with only two years of actual classes under my belt), and I remember the V1 code being a SNAP to figure out... even if it uses graphical routines, you can figure out what they do entirely by context -- there's not really anything bizarre or hard to figure out.

Netscape forced me to take on the name of BladeDragonX@netscape.net some time ago, but I can't remember how to change my email on the button, so you'd have to send it with the X attached, otherwise it goes to someone else.
