Which files do I download to run VERGE-rpg maker?

I'm a bit confused 'cause of all the files there are when I go to "Downloads verge 2".

Which ones do I download?!

The truth is, there are many versions of Verge. First of all,

if you run Windows XP or Windows 2000, your choices are limited, because they can't run the DOS Verges. You can use WinVerge2, V2.6r4/r5 (available at Vergesource and Verge-net.com) and V2.6r2 (available at Verge-net.com). WinV2 is the most stable of the Windows Verges, but the V2.6 series have 16-bit color features while WinV2 is 8-bit only.

If you run Win9x and can use DOS, you have several choices, the most prominent of which are the stable V2 (all-around good), and The Speed Bump's modified V2kj (Verge 2000+j, which is also all-around good, and has hicolor). You can also use any mentioned above.

Once you've decided on a version (it's not that hard, just pick the one you can run and don't mind the limitations of; my favorite is V2.6 r2, because it's fast while not being too unstable), you'll need a map editor (that's what we call maped), and a VCC. Winv2, V2, and V2kj all come with their own Mapeds. For V2.6, the mapeds for Winv2, or V2kj will do fine. Also, there is a Winmaped, which is available at Verge-net & Vergesource, which is a version of Maped for Windows (all others are in DOS, although they do work under XP & Win2k); it is all right but is a bit unstable, and doesn't do tile animations yet and has trouble with zones. Since you're a beginner, pick a DOS Maped for the moment.

In my opinion, the best Verge for a beginner to start with is Winv2. You can get it at Verge-net or Vergesource, and it comes with a VCC to compile your code with, and a Maped to go with it.

Now, after you've gotten a version of Verge (just ask if you need more help), go read the Verge-FAQ at Vergesource.com. It tells a lot about Verge and Verge game development (how VC works, entities, maps, sounds) in general.

One last thing: If you use V2.6 (any version, whether r2, r4, or r5), you will need the files SDL.dll, MIDAS11.dll, audiere.dll, zlib.dll, and libpng.dll. You can get all these files at a handy V2.6 package from Verge-net.com, or you can download them at Vergesource. In particular, V2.6r4 & r5 (which support MP3 playback) require audiere.dll, and SDL.dll. V2.6r2 (the r stands for Release, if you didn't know) requires MIDAS11.dll, zlib.dll, and libpng.dll. Again, you can get all these files at Vergesource.com or www.verge-net.com. There is a handy package for V2.6 at Verge-net that contains V2.6r2 with all the required DLLs, but no Maped, so you can use the one from V2kj (available at this site, Verge-rpg) or Winv2.

Remember, after that, read www.vergesource.com's Verge-FAQ, which will tell you a lot that you will need to get started, then read their V2 Newbie Guide in the Vergesource Articles section.

After that, when you need more help just post on Vergesource, Verge-net, or here. See you then!

...
Thanks for the info!
I've actually been expirementing with a couple of RPG maker systems, including 'O.H.R.RPG.CE',and 'RPGtoolkit',etc.
Verge seems to be the best that I've found so far in that it seems to be very advanced,it has a good group of users that can communicate between message boards and such, and it has a great group of websites.

I'm using Windows ME(2000) so I'm gonna start out with the Winv2 since it seems the most compatable user-friendly one for my computer.(and myself, lol)

Oh,and can you make html sigs for this message board?
If possible could you tell me to go to creat it?
(I already know the code, just not where to make it at)
And if not, then how about a regular sig?
Either one would be nice.!

(Forgive my rambling, but I'm just talkitive right now I guess)(lol)

Also, have you created any RPG's with VERGE?
If so,I'd like to check them/it out!

I'm creating one simalar to that of Final Fantasy 3/6
and The Legend Of Zelda:A Link To The Past(Zelda 3)
both for the SNES.(But you probably already knew that, right?)

Anyway, thanks and I look forward to chatting with you again soon!...

P.S.Could you tell me your age?
If so,thank you.
If not,then that's fine. ^u^

Yeah, I'm 16. I've been watching the Verge community for about four years. I didn't really do anything, because I couldn't understand how VergeC and the various utilities worked. Then one day, it hit me: I understood how VergeC operated, and everything (if you don't, www.cplusplus.com has a great tutorial for C and C variant languages). So, about a year ago I "officially" joined the community.

Yes, you can have a signature; unfortunately, you can't have HTML tags in it :( Anyway, to set your signature, click the "Profile" link at the top of the navigation bar on the left side of the page.

And no, unfortunately I haven't been creating in RPGs with Verge yet, I've just been playing around with it so far. I have an idea for an RPG with my friends, and we're working on art and story and whatnot, but it will be a while until we officially "begin" because there's a lot of stuff we've got to go over with everyone.

But in case you do want to play a ton of Verge RPGs, hop on over to Verge-net or Vergesource. They've got tons of downloads, including full games, game demos, technical demonstrations, and useful VC code that you can include in your own games.

In particular, though, get yourself a copy of Zeux's World (http://zara.verge-rpg.com, then go to his files page.). Zeux's World is one of the most advanced Verge games simply because it's not an RPG; he programmed a platforming game similar to Mario Bros. using just VC! He also has a ton of other well made games at his website. Zaratustra is one of the programming geniuses around here.

Finally, you may have not noticed but this website is only frequented every so often. I come here everyday but many others don't; although you can post anywhere, Vergesource is frequented much more often than here and has much more traffic, as far as I know. It's kind of like the community hub. Also, Verge has several chat rooms on several IRC networks (Vergesource.com has a tutorial explaining the various ones).

Windows ME is not the same as Windows 2000, just so you know :)

Also, what age are you? And, answer only if you want to, but do you attend Union High School?

Actually one only 12(13 on June 17)and no I don't attend Union High School.(one of the reasons being that I'm going into Junior High)(hehe)
I was homeschooled this past year(first and last time hehe)
and I'm going to Vandalia(spelling?)Christian School this year.

Anyway,if I'm using Windows ME should I still use the VERGE download I was going to,or should I use a different type of VERGE?

In case your curious(I don't know if I told you already)I'm working on an RPG by myself,(just started)
but it's gonna take a while to finish.I've got about a page of info so far but it still needs LOTS of work.^o^

Anyway,talk to you later(I hope ^-^)and I guess I'll see you at Vergesource!(Again,I hope ^-^)
Bye.

You can still use Winv2. It's one of my choices because many other versions simply don't work under XP. Forsaken OS. Anyway, Winv2 will do fine. It's very stable.

like I said, it comes with Maped to make maps and VCC to compile code, but you still need to download the V2 Utilities from the Verge-net or Verge-rpg.com's downloads/Verge2/engine files section. The V2 utilities comes with a sprite generator, a font generator, a palette table generator, a pakfile system, and other neat stuff.

Also, Winv2 comes with its own pakfile system, but it does not allow to extract the files once you have pakked them. The old one does, but with a catch: you can only pack 51.6 files or something.

Anyway, the V2 utilities come with readmes for everything too.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
Verge-rpg.com is a member of the lunarnet irc network, and would like to take this opportunity to remind you that regardless how babies taste, it is wrong to eat them.
