I'm thinking that maybe, in your command line you added whatever.pcx when you maybe only had to state the name and not the extension. Like How you don't have to go vcc map.vc, you just put vcc map.

I'm a teeny bit confused by your description, so I'll just step through the process.
- Make PCX file... make sure the image grid is correct and all that jack.
- Make the MAK file. For the pcx_name and chr_name entries, do NOT specify an extension!!!
- Run CHRMAK on the MAK file, not the PCX. CHRMAK requires the MAK file (with extension) in the command line. (e.g. "chrmak bob.mak")
Small points:
Make sure your MAK file is correct also, and that CHRMAK is the proper version. I think the CHRMAKs from different V2 spinoffs are incompatible... maybe :) In other words, if all is go and it still doesn't work, trying reinstalling the ZIP.
Erm, I hope that helped.
That is all.
