It uses its own kind of code...
But it is based on C/C++. So if you read C/C++ books, it should help you a bit to learn coding.

verge 1 and straight v2 use djgpp c/c++ for the engine
v2k and variants use watcomm c/c++ for the engine
I'm not sure what code base win v1 uses and I'm not sure about Praetor's new vcc beta 7.

v1 and v2 (and v2+i) are C/DJGPP
v2k and up are C++/Watcom
winv1 is C++/MSVC, I believe.
