I was going through the tutorial, following it to a T. When I finally ran Verge, I got this happy little message:

So I'm running Windows XP if that means anything. I have some concerns which may/may not matter. Apparently .map is a type of CodeWarrior file and .VCS is a Palm Desktop file, so those two files have icons for those particular programs. I don't know if adding the roots changed the actual files at all. So does it look like I screwed something up while following the tutorial or that there's an actual conflict? The files I downloaded were Verge2 and Verge2 Utilities on the engine files page.

The file types don't matter... But the Dos versions of verge won't work in XP. You'll have to use winV2 or Verge2.6.

Blah.

Now when I try to run it, it goes to a blank screen, then comes back with No AutoExec() found in system scripts. Here's the log:
v2.6 startup. Logfile initialized.
Sys: Initializing keyboard handler.... OK
Sys: Initializing timer. Set 100hz.... OK
Sys: Initializing music system.... OK
Sys: Initializing graphics.... OK
Initialize console.... OK
Loading 8 bit translucency table... OK
Loading system VCInitializing VC interpreter
system vclib init: 0 funcs, 0 ints (0 bytes), 0 strings
... OK
Sys: Exiting with message: No AutoExec() found in system scripts.

Also, I can't use the VCC.EXE that comes with the Windows Verge. Even if I've got DOS4GW it can't read the system.vc.

I'm assuming you're a beginner to this, and the problem stumped me for a while too.

You see, if you're like any normal computer user, you haven't messed with your computer settings. That means that XP probably hides file name extensions from you. Saving a script in Notepad actually saves it as "system.vc.txt" rather than "system.vc". Especially if there's a Notepad file icon there. Anyway. Go to Tools-Folder Options-View-Then uncheck "Hide extensions from unknown file types."

You should always do this on a computer, anyway. Never assume Windows knows what you shouldn't see.

Put Dos4Gw.exe in your C:\Windows directory. Then, run vcc.exe as vcc.exe -all. Edit the Cmd Line: field of the file by right clicking on it and checking Program properties if you like.

It is not wrong to not understand, for we are all ignorant, but neither is understanding pointless.
