first off, if you are using a newer type of verge try setting in user.cfg to hicolor put in "hicolor" w/o quotes.
2. It could be that they are in either 24 bit, or you need to change them to 16 bit.
3. if you are using an older version, then yuo need them to be 8 bit.

There are no 16bit BMPs. 8 and 24, that's it. The hicolour VERGEs convert them to it's native pixel format, whatever it may be at the time.
It's conceivable that you've got a mismatched palette. If you drew these pictures by hand, and then reduced them to 8bit colour depth, it's likely that most of your palette sits in the lowest 32 colours. These 32 colour entries are gray in VERGE's default palette.
Try using VERGE's default palette instead.
