VERGE2 is a very nice RPG engine to use. It has commands to let you do just about anything in your game. The commands are easy to learn, and easy to use. The mad editor makes creating maps easy, with many useful features in it, like paralax. The only problem I saw with it was the fact everything had to be done through DOS prompt. But that is why I wrote VEW2. That program made creating VERGE2 games even easier, with syntax highlighting and all-windows interface. Read my lower posts about VEW2 to get the URL for it. And download the Verge2 Engine Files zip that says "Latest oficial release of VERGE2", and also download the utilities. And then follow the tutorials on this site for getting started. Those that take the time to learn how to use VERGE will be very pleased in the end.
ps: if you make your first working map, and it has funky colors, use the MORPH PALETTE(0,0,0,0,63) at the beginning of the first event of every map. And if it says your missing console.gif, they don't include it in the zip. Your best bet is to download a game made with VERGE2, and copy that game's console.gif to your game's directory.
But that is just my humble opinion.

I can't believe this site doesn't actually explain what VERGE is. For a brief overview see:
http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~rwkl97/oldep/verge.html
The page is old, predating VERGE 2, and VERGE online isn't being developed anymore to the best of my knowledge.
Screenshots can be found at:

Anyone else know a more up to date summary of what VERGE is? :)
