Hey everybody, remember me? Mwa ha ha, I've returned... again. (: I don't plan to be a regular VERGEr again (not just yet, anyway -- this will be my last semester at college, and I wanna enjoy it! but next year may be a different story), but I AM still keeping up with VERGE's progress...

I've actually just begun to use VERGE 2 after years of using nothing but VERGE V1+. I was too stubborn to learn something new. (: But every year, for a friend of mine named Bridget, on her birthday, I make her a VERGE game which takes place somewhere on the Ursinus College campus. I've done this the past two years in VERGE 1, and this year, I decided to be ambitious and make a side-scroller for her. I started early so I'd have time to learn V2 and study Zaratustra's absolutely amazing Zeux's World side-scroller engine, and I think I've done a fairly decent job on both counts so far (Zaratustra, your engine is AMAZING! You're like a Math God or something... it took me a long time to figure out how your engine worked, but now that I have, I'm in awe of you!).

Anyway, I've finished a small chunk of "Bridget III", and it's looking pretty good so far. But, during my last test run, I noticed something rather bothersome. See, this game is a bit unusual in the way it connects together, because I'm attempting to recreate an entire college campus in a 2D side-scroller game. So I've created many maps that connect together in many different ways. Some of these maps have the same S3M file playing in the background... yet, when I switch from one map to another, the S3M *restarts*. I didn't notice this at first because it didn't do it at first... but as soon as the music is switched to a different song ONCE, whether through PlayMusic or a map switch, songs begin to restart between maps.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening? If not, I have a favor to ask of someone... someone who still has a working C compiler (which I, unfortunately, do not have anymore)... could you edit V2's source code to make it keep track of what song is playing, and, in every occurrence of music-switching, keep the song from restarting if the game tries to play the same song again?

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me. If anyone modifies V2's code as described above, or if anyone already has, please let me know, and feel free to email the new VERGE.EXE to me (thlipschultz@ursinus.edu)... you will be greatly thanked.

Also, I'll be happy to upload the Bridget Trilogy to this site when it's done, though I doubt anyone here will understand a lot of it -- it consists primarily of in-jokes relating to Bridget's life at school. But she's already given me permission to upload the first two to the VERGE site if I so desire, so just let me know if you guys are interested -- I can easily type up a short text file explaining the in-jokes.

Thanks again!
-Tom

Yay, help from the Speed Bump himself! (: Thanks, man!

And by the way (I should've thought of this when I originally wrote the message, but I had just woken up) -- HAPPY 1/1/1 EVERY1! (:

the old musicposition variables would be nice. So after battles when we come back to the map we can start the music where we left off. This way. we don't always hear the first 30 secs of a song and can actually hear the ending!

Seriously, tho, I know the entire sound system is still being worked on and all, but I hope at least a very basic mod position feature is being thought about.

If you don't fill in the music field on your map it will continue to play the previous song. I dunno, I have v2k+j so this may not be true of all of them...

I was actually rather upset to see the "cutbacks" in music support from VERGE1 to VERGE2. The music not restarting would be nice (I've now discovered that it seems to restart only after switching to CERTAIN S3Ms... for example, I have several maps that use 2ND_PM.S3M. If I switch to a map that uses CRYST.S3M, then go back to the set of maps that uses 2ND_PM.S3M, 2nd_pm won't restart between maps... but if I go to a map that uses FF1BTROL.XM, then go back to maps that use 2nd_pm, the music will restart between maps... maybe it's just XMs vs. S3Ms?)...

...and I also miss modposition. If it could be brought back, that would be nice... in fact, if possible, split it into two variables: modblock and modpattern. That way, you can restart a song at the exact note in which it left off (which wouldn't sound very good with some MODs/S3Ms/XMs/MTMs, but would with others).

Just an idea.

Read my reply to Grenideer... it only has this problem SOME of the time... it's very strange...
