How about the topic being. Osama bin Laden/Afganistan.
that could spawn some cool games.

I don't have a problem with making fun of contemporary social issues but I'm sure some people do so it's probably not too good of an idea.

Also, I really don't want to devote that much of my energy into making a game with such a cheezy premise. :P

Or it could just spawn one huge flamewar, the revolt of several Verge users, and one nasty lawsuit. Here's another great idea for HOV: Make a game that you can only solve with $50 and a dead hooker. On second thought...

Since Halloween is comig up and the guys on IRC usually have nothing to do, why not take that time to have an HOV. Only problem is, that we just had an HoV not too long ago. If anyone is willing to participate, it would be cool. I would like to host it, but I don't know if anyone would want me to, for some odd reason. The rules would be, must have some sort of reference to a scary movie (scream, Halloween, Friday the 13th),
a character has to die, and something to do with Pumpkins. Consider it! BTW, if I did host, would anyone join? ^_^;

Don't know about this one. I've talked to Semi and he may host one (I'd be helping). I'll post more info in a week or two if anything comes of this.

Celas

From past experence, this will fail. When I tried to do a HOV on school violence (humor) a bunch of people (who will remain nameless) bitched and moaned about the topic. Any current events along these lines should be avoided no matter how good they sound. All you need is to get some bitchy person and it will end up fucking over your day.

I don't think it's such a bad idea. I know this topic can be addressed in a game with plenty of style and tact. Basically, it raises the stakes for a HoV. People who address it dumbly get bitched at for trivializing a major incident, while people who do a fine job get truckloads of praise.

I will agree with Celas about bitchy people, though. There are lots. I'm from Utah, the world capitol of bitchy, easily-offended people, and I hate it.

Anyhow, I don't think this would make quite as good an HoV topic as others because it lacks humor, and I don't think it would be possible to tap this subject in any humorous manner (unless you had a Kill Bin Laden game with lots of dumb weapons and a big smiling bin Laden face bouncing around the screen saying stupid things in Arabic or whatever the hell he speaks...)

My point is that I have no point, so I'll shut up =P

That is all.

The only reason I don't want to do an HoV like this is because the games would all be cheezy nationalistic propaganda or cheap satirical comedies.

As far as lacking humor, are you nuts? Direguarding bad taste, there are endless possibilities for making comical games based on the events of the past month or so.

That said, let's forget the whole idea. Or wait a few months and jokes that are in "bad taste" now will be hilarious then.
