...but when will v3 be released?

Will vecna and the rest of the team ever pick it up again? Was it near-done when they stopped working on it? (or have they stopped..?)

Just asking out of curiosity.

vecna is actually doing time right now, he was caught with a lot of pre-mature chicken images. i hardly believe there will be such a thing as verge 3 without a person of such sexual curiosity.

Why does soulbain exist? Why, it's just another stunning example of the universe's twisted sense of humor.

Well, uh. Good question! Its a shame you didnt wait like a week to ask it! (no, v3 will not be out in a week)

The long and gory story of why v3 didnt come out like, a YEAR ago or something is not really something I care to go into at this exact moment and can't really be elaborated on without pointing fingers which I have no desire to do. The fact is it was pretty damn close to completion at one point, and then a bunch of people quit, and we all gave up.

Time passes.

After I finished fixing up winv2 for the Windows Diver Down release, I decided I should make a hicolor version of winv2, but using a new graphics API because I always felt that the way hicolor was done in other V2's was really hacked up and crappy. When I started pondering that, I realized that the last working vc version of v3 could pretty much accomplish the same thing if I just made it use v2 file formats and stuff. And then everybody was like "yeah! but we should do with v3 formats! and then add a bunch of stuff! and then uh, we should just do v3 again!" and so, v3 was reborn. And v3 has been under very active re-dev ever since.

A full site re-design (and more importantly, total re-coding) has been underway courtesy of McGrue over the last two weeks. This is, of course, the first major site upgrade in like, YEARs. :p I expect the new site, tho not 100%, will go live in the next week. (it will still be more functional than the site is right NOW tho ^_^)

There may be some v3 tech demos released soonish. I don't know. tatsumi might get shouty if we did that. He thinks we should do some kind of grand release. But I've done this a few times and grand releases just mean they never actually get released ^_^ I dont want to release too many details right now, both because we do want SOME surprises, and because some stuff still isn't done, of course.

To avoid "a bunch of people quitting" this time, I am basically solely responsible for the engine, and tatsumi is solely responsible for the devtools. zeromus has also been contributing significant amounts of code, but he is basically the 'free agent' that goes around and improves things, we are not relying on him for anything as he is a busy man! The (new) devtools are all coded in C#, which means rapid and stable development. It also means that to DEVELOP games you WILL need the .NET runtime. The engine itself, however, remains unmanaged C++ and won't need NET to play the games. aen has also been working on Java dev tools, I dont know how commited he is to supporting them and keeping them up with the v3 stuffs, but I imagine he will. In either case, you'll need to download SOME multi-megabyte system library, either NET or JDK. But oh well. Such is the price of progress!

I could rant a bit about the philosophy of the v3 design but, maybe I'll save it for when the new site goes live. The question of "why bother making a v3" is very good one, but I think v3 is worth the effort and will fill a niche that currently is lacking.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
