I remember you too! Where are all these oldbies coming from, and why the hell haven't you all been posting...?

I just want to point out to everyone that this is the kind of stuff that keeps a community going, and keeps games coming down the pipeline. If you want to make a game but you don't have the resources to do it, volunteer to help others. Some people in this community have pretty ambitious ideas and could really use some help. No doubt Cyberdude's game is much better with one person [Shadesbane] specializing in CHRs.

Speaking of which, are there any skilled trackers left? We're hoping to put together an original soundtrack and, well... we know shit about music.

That is all.

I do music on the side, I have some MIDIs I just finished, but I usuially do tracking. Though my game is going to tie me up making music right now. :(

Btw, shadesbane, when are you going to IM me?

certainly depends on the amount of music, else i can possibly help if you only have questions. i've tracked vg music since three years ago (verge community 3 years) and been tracking for six years now.

right now i've got some spare time since i don't have the music tools for the GBA as of yet.

tell me your thoughts or ask anything and i'll try to help.

regards,
hampus 'zaril'.

I'm thinking of trying it out for myself at this point and seeing if I'm any good. So here's my question:

How should I get started?

Like, in your opinion, what's the best tracker, and where can I get a good variety of nice samples for free? And, are there any tutorials or anything out there to get me going with the tracker of choice, or do the help docs cover everything I need to know?

As far as music theory and stuff like that, I'm good. It's just the tech end of it that I don't grasp yet.

That is all.

Has free sample packs and all. I don't really use them and don't know how they sound. Those can be used as long as you don't sell the music or benefit money on it etc. The site also has trackers you can choose between. I'd recommend Fast Tracker 2 (DOS based) or Modplug Tracker (Windows). I like both of them but use the latter myself.

I haven't actually looked for any documents about how to get started. But I'm guessing you can find a lot in the Modplug Tracker help. Btw, if you can't find it at maz-sound goto http://www.modplug.com for the tracker. No free samples no that site I believe though.

I figured out myself how to track. Just import/load samples (wave files etc) and use them in patterns at different notes (the keyboard is used like a piano with FT2 setup) in modplug tracker you have to go to View - Setup and change Keyboard to FT2 Keys. :) That's the best one in my humble opinion.

If anything I've forgotten, please note.

Hampus 'zaril' Berggren
