I don't think MapEd's import layer function works anymore.

To create the tileset yourself, just create a 307 pixel wide image (PCX for old VERGE, BMP for 2.6) with eighteen(18) 16x16 tiles with a one pixel border around each. The height of the image can be whatever
you need it to be to fit the number of tiles you create.

If someone else could direct you to a sample tileset, that would help you more than my description.

It's rather simple. MapEd 2.01's import PCX function works fine. However, tSB never got around to adding that kind of functionality into WME or Maped+i.

Anyway, MapEd 2.01 is the MapEd version that comes with every version of Verge except for v2k+i, and you can use the import functionality two different ways:

1. Create a tileset as Dev described, 18 tiles wide w/ 1-pxl in between each tile and then select Import as Tileset

or

2. Create the whole map as a PCX file and then select Import as (Image?) or basically Import as the other option available.

I hope that helps!

More accurately, you import it as a whole layer. And it automatically (I think...) handles transparency for you (i.e. whatever is in color-slot #0 of your palette is transparent)

::goes to look it up in the MapEd docs::

Oh, I gave you some erronious information. You import the image as a layer under the Main-Layer-Import Layer menu...

For more detailed information, go here:
http://www.vergesource.com/articles/view/15/5/

That's the page of the MapEd manual which deals with the layer menu.

Hope that helps!
