Ummm. . . this is kind of a follow up to my last post about getting a new computer. I've found the following "barebones" at a shop near here:

1.5 GHz Pentium IV
256K SDRAM
nVidia GeForce 2
Motherboard w/ built-in 3d audio

The only problem is that this is all it comes with, so I'd have to import my old hard drives (a 2 gig and 1 gig, not a lot of space), CD-ROM (2x, yuck), sound card (SB 16) and other similarly old outdated things to it. Is it worth it, or should I go for a less powerful system with better peripherals?

I strongly suggest an AMD processor instead of a P4. An Athlon XP "1800+" (which is really 1.5GHz) outperforms a 2GHz P4 in most of the benchmarks I've seen. Moreover, an Athlon XP is almost half the cost of a P4 of comparable power. ($255 vs $410)

This is one of those instances where you can get faster and cheaper at the same time. :D
Secondly, the motherboard has builtin audio, don't move your SB16 into it. ;)

Personally, I would get an additional 256MB of RAM as well.

For once, I gotta agree with tsb here. Get an AMD. It outperforms an intel mhz for mhz (The United Devices distributed cancer-cure app that is SPONSORED by INTEL recently changed it's cpu-scoring to reflect the reality of this: A Pentium4 1.5ghz is ranked 100, while my AMD tbird 1.2ghz is ranked 120).

I have 512mb of DDR. It's all good baby. If you stick with regular SDRAM, thats cheap enough you should go out and get a gig. ;)

Also, whatever you do, don't skimp on the motherboard.

Take the money you save by buying AMD and get yourself a 60gb harddrive. :)

It sounds like an almost exact copy of my old 486... Try not to take too many parts out of it. I dismantled mine years ago to build a Pentium out of it, and one thing I do wish is that I still had that old 486 to play those Protected Mode runtime games. :) You just can't replace that old hardware in terms of DOS compatibility.

Other than that, I agree with Speed. Get an AMD.

I recently bought a new video card only to find my motherboard doesn't have ANY AGP slots, so I'm going to upgrade. I've already got :

Pentium Celeron
128 MB Ram (I'd like to get more)
.
30 gig Hard Drive
Floppy Drive
CD-ROM Drive
CD-RW Drive
.
ATI Rage Fury Pro Graphics Card (NEW)
Sound Card (PCI)
Modem (PCI)
Parallel Port (ISA)
.
Keyboard/Mouse
Speakers
Decent Monitor
Scanner (Parallel Port)

I have $270 to spend.

One of my teachers can sell me a brand new case for only $20 (retail ~$80). The only problem is I think that it may be made for an AT motherboard. So can anyone tell me where I can get my hands on an AT motherboard (or an ATX in case I'm wrong) that fits this criteria :

Support for Celeron Processor
(1+) AGP Slot
(2+) PCI Slot
(1+) ISA Slot

Or if anyone know of a cheap enough case that fits an ATX, that would probably be alot easier than trying to find a good AT. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Ah, yes. Those were the days. The great heyday of DOS. Sometimes I wish we were still back then. . .or something. I still use my 486 to play a game or two. Mostly Descent (how I love thee, Descent ^_^) and the occasional Duke 3-d. Aye, those certainly were the days.
