I am lost on how to make a chr file. I have found no documentation on it anywhere. The mini-tutorial thing that came with v27 was extremely vauge, and didn't work when I tried what it said. Does it only work when invoked in DOS, or something? Blarg.

Any help would be appreciated here.

i could never get it to work just by opening up DOS. I have to go into the v2.6 mapeditor, scroll down to execute DOS command, then the chrmak16 commands work. like this:
chrmak16 whatever.mak
The .mak file must be a .mak file not a text file and must have the correct dimensions of your character, # of rows, # of collumns, etc... if any of this is off it will mess up. If you have movement script for frames that do not exist it wont work either ;) Here is one of my mak files, just copy it to notepad and edit it for your character. Make sure to click save as all file types when you save, NOT save as text file. and remove all my comments heh. here:
bmpname SIDUS.BMP (name of BMP)
chrname SIDUS.CHR (name of CHR to be spit out)

frame_w 28 (width of each movement frame)
frame_h 62 (height of each movement frame)

hot_x 0 (hot spot stuff...heh)
hot_y 16
hot_w 16
hot_h 16

per_row 5 (self explainitory)
total_frames 20

lidle 15 (idle frames of each direction)
ridle 10
uidle 5
didle 0

lscript F19W10F18W10F17W10F16W10F17W10F18W10F19W10
rscript F10W10F11W10F12W10F13W10F12W10F11W10F10W10
uscript F5W10F6W10F7W10F6W10F5W10F8W10F9W10F8W10
dscript F0W10F1W10F2W10F1W10F0W10F3W10F4W10F3W10
end

in the movement script F followed by a number calls a frame of the character. F10 called the 11th frame, because F0 is actually the first frame. W followed by number is how long of a pause between frames. W10 is standard.

As for your character sheet, each frame of the character must be the same dimensions and have a 1 pixel white border around each frame. I hope i havent confused you even more

I can't get chrmak16 to work. I've tried opening it in DOS, in Windows, anyother way I could think of. it always says the same thing:
"
Syntax: CHRMAK chr.mak
see readme.txt for more details (the mak file format has changed).
"

I'm at a loss.

do you include the 16 in CHRMAK16? also, did you try running dos through the map editor? thats the only way i could get it to work. i use v2.6 mapeditor to run dos and make my CHR, even though I use v2.7 heh

That's all well and good, but MapEd 2.7 doesn't seem to have that function, unless I'm missing it. And all of the links to outdated files in the downloads are broken. So where can I aquire MapEd 2.6?

It's in the download section.

I hate to be such a bother. However, I was unable to find this 'execute DOS' command in either maped v2.6 or v2.7. Am I just not looking hard enough?
