Okay, here we go...
Once apon a time ago, there was a simplistic RPG creator called VERGE. It was a two part dos based system that required a bit of programming knowledge but not that much. And it though it missed a battle system, because it was quite simple people liked it and made little games with it. Some of them were nice simple games, some were beginnings of mighty adventures.
I and many others would talk on #verge and everything was fine.
It carryied on like this for a while, and then Verge Dev (as it was then) said Lo! behold I bring forth tidings of Verge2!
And the commoners waited. they saw glimses of the mysterious "pack-in game". And then one fatal night Verge 2 was unleashed.
And no demo, nor any trace of Verge1 remained.
The battle was uphill to learn what was essentaly a game engine with no direction. No rpg functions.
Some cried "Behold the glory, it is so in-depth and the possiblyities are endless", but others cried "Its too hard, I wanna make RPGS not learn C!"
And the less skilled left the rest.
The spawn child Verge2 was not complete and progressed in a wild and chaotic fastion, people saw something they did not like.
Some cried "Lo I shall create a new Engine!" others "I want a simpler engine" more "I want win32 support" "I want 16bit colour"
And so Verge Split. In to the coders, who could and the RPG makers who couldn't.
The moral of this story?
It was once about the RPG games.
Now a RPG fan would strugle to find a foot-hold in the ever changing VERGE2 mess.

And how do I know this sad, but true story?
I was once a RPG maker, and yes I was part of the Verge scene. I remeber the old sites and thouse who have left.
I am History and history comes back...

You want easy made RPGs, use Verge 1 it hasn't disappeared from existance. I who like to learn coding and so want 16-bit support, and being a musician I want IT support. Those aer both features you don't have to fence with.
There is EZV or whatever Zaratustra called it. It is VERGE 2 btu has all the old VERGE 1 commands and you still have the possibility to add more IF you want to advance.
You can make a VERGE 1 game in 16 bit (though, you'd have to think 16-bit and not 8-bit in some parts)
VERGE 2 keeps evolving, you can choose when you don't want to use the new version.
I never really used VERGE 1, it was too "strict" too boring and no fun imho. However, the less limitations, the tougher game making gets, cause you normally want to use the powers of the engine to the limits. Who makes 4 color games (unless 4CoV) when you have 16 million?
I don't think a lot of people left Verge cause a new version came out, cause they still had VERGE 1. Games stopped cause people like Verge 2 better and never finish their games. If people who liked Verge 1 would have stayed, they'd have kept making games. no?

Bloody gibs on toast with a salad and fries to go! It's been AGES since I'd seen Extended Play. Holy crap, I feel like a part of my mind has just snapped back into its proper place. Ah, the good old days when every game had transparent blue text boxes, and Kita Kor'alis strutted down the streets of town in just a couple of tiny furs...

I've been going through this phase of going to sleep when it's dark and getting up when it's light :) Unfortunately with the time difference it means there's hardly anyone on IRC whenever I join. Not that I've been going on that often lately since I just had my finals last month.
