im trying to decide how big my CHRs should be for my lil game. here are three prototypes:
www.geocities.com/sheolwulf/jeans.JPG (its 200Kish)
they are a bit rough around the edges but what I am primarily concerned with right now is size, however any other comments or suggestions are welcome. The screen shot is the size of the full screen while in game. ie: put your computer in 640x480 mode and it should take up the entire screen and look like it really does in verge.
Im even more indecisive than I usually am with this... but it IS an important decision. bigger chr = bigger doorways = bigger houses = less on screen at any given time. but smaller chr = farther away from how they look in my head/on paper. arg!
pay no mind to the background, its placeholder till i learn how to import my nice hicolor photoshop junk. Apparently its not as easy as hicolor chrs.

I like all three of the characters on the picture, and the tree, and the grass, if your really bent on the big vs. small idea then go for medium, I'm no character artist, but I would figure that would be the easiest of the two, not to small, and not too big, like breath of fire 3 size :-)
in all seriousness, they look damn good, and to think people like me used to complain about lack of character artists.

I'm going to make a verge, its going to be called Verge: ITLUYATSBOVOTOOAOCDTTKHTPIV, it will stand for 'Verge: Impossible to learn unless you are The Speed Bump or Vecna or Tatsumi Oreo or a cool Developement team that knows how to program in Verge' :)

Thanks for the input KarmaCult. I think your right. I went for a "medium" one minus 1 pixel. Thats how anal I am about my CHRs :) Current version:

Hey auroraborealisis, care to slam down on me and totally rip it apart? Please? You seem to be very knowledgeable in the CHR field and unafraid to be honest :) CHRs are my favorite part of VERGE thus far... I wanna get better. I like to see one of your CHRs too :oP

I really had to look too!
The outline's a little thick. :D
Very cool! (I really did have to stare at it for a moment to find something worth bitching about)

It think for a 640x480 resoltution the mid-sized would be your best choice. Also, is this game going to have mouse controlled movement? It seems with sprites that small it would be easier to control. It would work without it I suppose, but kudos to you if you do it. Not many people have taken advantage of v2's mouse control capabilities.

Are you talking about jeans.JPG or jeans2.JPG? in the first one the outlines are real nasty. that was just me being lazy hehe in a lot of places there are black globs floating in midair. In jeans2.JPG (the one Im currently using) the outlines are only 1 pixel wide and I put a few gaps in here and there to prevent her from looking too cardboard cut-out like. Still too thick you think?

I think you should be aiming for the same kind of nonoutlinedness that you use on the actual sprite. It'd blend in with the background much nicer then.
It's not that serious, though. I'd call it minor at best. ;)

One technique I've seen that works is to do outlines in a darker color than the surrounding color, rather than black. In other words, a sprite with yellow/blond hair and gray clothes will have a dark yellow outline around her hair (just on the outside of the sprite, not on the inside) and a dark gray outline around her clothes.
This provides nice contrast between background and sprite, but isn't too sharp. Of course, it takes some experimentation to use properly, but try it out :)
That is all.

I like the smallest one best, because it blurs the details a bit and gives it a more finished look. Also, the larger ones seem rather lanky, especially the arms.
The size of a CHR is tricky. You want to aim for the largest size that you can do before the details get too difficult to draw well. I know I had that problem when I went from 50x48 to 100x96 CHRs.
