I was just thinking about this so I'm going to share it with everyone. Who knows, maybe it'll come true?
Verge is not an engine. Verge is a game creation system. You can't make games with an engine. You make games with the tools.
In other words, why isn't there a Windows-based Verge IDE to complement WinV2? One program that manages Verge "projects" and organizes all your resources would be a godsend to this community.
- A media player to preview sound effects, music files, and videos.
- A character editor for creating, editing, and animating entities. Think ACE, Windows-style.
- A tile editor in the same vein as above.
- A map editor for obvious purposes.
- A built-in script editor similar to the one in UnrealEd, or to using MSVC.
All of these things should be accessible through a single program. When you feel like making your game, you should start up this wonderful IDE, and never close it until you're done working for the day. No more multiple program hassles!
Furthermore, there should be one standardized version of both engine and editor, and both should be distributed in the same package. Think how much easier the whole system would be for newbies?
Personally, I think V2 has evolved into a damn fine engine, and it's time we refined the tools to the point that V2 is a damn fine *system* in its own right.
Honestly, if there was a single, effective, easy-to-use IDE, accompanied by intelligent and complete documentation, I think Verge would become "fun" again, just like it was back in the day of V1.
That is all.

Someone actually made one I think, but nobody used it. I really don't think an IDE would bring more activity, because the kind of people who would only use verge if it had an IDE, probably wouldn't be that productive in the first place.
It might serve to attract a couple newbies perhaps, but those who really enjoy making games for its own sake would work only in DOS if they had to.

Personally, I HATE Windows. If it weren't for the fact that V2 DOS doesn't play music properly on my computer, I would have NEVER switched over to WinV2. And I'm still using all DOS-based programs to MAKE my game, because DOS is still my favorite operating system. (:

I find it extremely convenient to look at my map in maped and the script simultaneously, (handy for warp events, where you can see the destination in the map as you type in the corresponding code) then hit the F9 (or whatever) key to run the engine and test the map out.

Which is exactly why an IDE would be pretty helpful. And thus the circle is complete.

Besides using a GUI frontend, I suppose you could just use it manage your utilities, as well. If you make it into one big program, we then have a Windows OS. I don't like that; it's why I prefer Linux. Every tool does a certain thing, and there is no one perfect program... But...
Going back to the IDE, just give yourself a graphical shell from which to use all your utilities, get us an integrated version of maped, maybe let you call Fntmak and Chrmak from menus, have a bottom pane editing a VC file; you don't have to rewrite all the Verge utilities, just use what we have.

Sounds like a good compromise between the fundamentalists and the progressives, Omni :)
Of course, more than anything, my reason for suggesting this is to ensure that everything is fully compatible -- with each other, with the engine, and with Windows (XP, in my case).
That is all.

I like the working with bits and pieces. No gay program that will crash and you lose all your progress instead of a single file's progress. Heh, well I'm not gonna stop anyone doing it, I'm just ranting about how I love the current Verge make-a-game-pack. :)
