I had virtually no experience coding before, and I wasn't much of an artist. VC really isn't much of a problem to learn, if you really try to.

I had zero coding experience whatsoever before I got into verge. Well, I did learn HTML by myself when I first got my computer, but that's it. I learned with v1 first, which is a great start, and then moved to v2 when it was released. It is a GREAT stepping stone to C++ (the basics of which I know now, but haven't been studying lately). You may want to try it out just to see if you like the taste of coding.
Above all, if you want to make a game, or just a little demo - try it. Trust me, it's a lot easier than it seems. Ask questions on the help board and we'll be happy to help. Read the docs. Read the articles/FAQs on this site and the verge source. You've got plenty of resources to help you.

PS- a GREAT way to learn is by example. If you're starting with v1 then Sully, the pack-in, is a great one. Or just download any simple game to see how things work.

I started just like you, no code experience, no art experience, no music experience. I didn't even know html. Three or so years later I can make games that are nigh approaching the quality of a super nintendo rpg.

I'm not saying this just to float my own boat, but rather that you can become a very talented coder, artists, musician, whatever you want, if you take the time to learn and gain experience.

With determination you can do anything. heh I know, cheesy line, but its true. when i first stumbled onto this page I had zero coding, pixelating, and music tracking experience. but I wanted to make an RPG heh. So in five months my pixel art skills made massive leaps and my music tracking ability is coming along nicely too.

I hate programming though, it just isn’t fun for me. So I tried scripting what I could in VERGE while making pretty graphics and things for my game and posted it on a geocities web page for others to see.

Apparently people like my pixel art and the story I wrote up for the game... Now I have someone with experience (made 2 RPGs from scratch) writing up a completely new isometric (Diablo & Fallout style view) engine for my game.

It all started with VERGE though. Also, using verge you learn about a lot of what goes on in the programming side of tile engines and how the things work. I was able to communicate to my programmer about our new engine because of what I learned here.

Anyway, I guess I could of said all this in one sentence: Give it a try. If your serious about making a game, put the time in and you wont regret it.

I remember plunging into the RPG scene back in 1997...

I never finished a game.

I released, frankly, crap-ass demos.

But I had the time of my ****ING LIFE.

Do it. You'll enjoy it, for the community if nothing else.

You have to be careful that you don't just skip from one "project" to the next because you hit a little roadblock, or even a speed bump (sorry, tSB :P) If you're going to do something, do one thing and do it well.

Also, if you don't want to jump into everything (coding, art, music, design, etc.) all at once, work on one of those skills and see if anyone needs help on _their_ project in that area.

Good luck!

That is all.

You made a lot of progress in five months! Congrats on the engine, too. Good luck with Sheolwulf!

That is all.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
