Alright, here's the deal. I'm looking for an RPG maker that can make a game that is similar to Chrono Trigger. I have sorted my way through the files and pages at rpgmaker.net, and I THINK Verge may potentially be the engine I am looking for.

The first problem, of course, is that I am a total newbie. I have no idea how to code. I can't even get Verge to work because I have no idea how to make a user.cfg (or whatever) file.

Should I even try? Am I a lost cause? I would really, really like to design a RPG for myself, my friends, and heck the entire internet community. Is Verge capable of making a Chrono-Trigger style game, or should I look elsewhere?

I don't care about ease of use. RPG maker is easy to use, but I don't like its limitations. I am willing to learn. I just need some help! Any would be appriciated.

If nothing else, V2 has sheer power and flexibility on its side.

The downside is that VC is indeed a bit tricky, but once you're used to the thought processes involved, (just problem solving techniques) it's a breeze.

User.cfg's a piece of cake. Just put this in it:

vidmode 320 240
end

There's lots of other options and stuff, but that's about all you need. (technicly, all you need is the "end" line, actually)

Anyhow, if you're looking to learn VC, the VERGE Source (link at your left, above the "New Account" button) has a ton of articles, tutorials, sample VC and the like. Also, if you have an IRC client (get one at mirc.com) you can log onto irc.esper.net (default port) and join #vchelp. The friendly folks there would be perfectly happy to help.

Thanks for the advice. The only problem is, I don't know how to make the user.cfg file at all! Is it a text file? Do I make it some other way? Remember, I'm not only a newbie, I'm a POWER NEWBIE!

After checking out the Verge Source, I have gained confidence about being able to program my RPG. Verge looks capable of doing just about everything! I'll see where it gets me. Thanks in advance for the help.

It's just a simple text file. You can use NotePad if you like, just make sure that you save it as user.cfg. (sometimes NotePad likes to be gimpy and call it user.cfg.txt, gwa) TextPad seems to be the overall VC editor of choice. (textpad.com, I think)

The same goes for VC files, and CHR (character sprite)make files.

Yeah, I understand the likes of Quantum Physics and Molecular Theory. What's the point? I just need you to tie my shoes.
