Resolution is simply the number of pixels onscreen. So 640x480x16 would be 640 pixels across, 480 pixels up and down, and 16 bits per pixel. (and 2^16 is 65535, which would be the number of colours you have to play with)

You can set the resolution in VERGE in one of two ways. Either put vidmode [xres] [yres] in user.cfg, or check VERGEC.TXT for the SetResolution command.

More pixels in the same amount of screen space = smaller pixels. Simply use a higher resolution to get more detail, in other words. 640x480 should be all you need, but Verge can go even higher if you're so inclined.
