Ok, Diver Down is currently being developed in v2, and is heading in the WinV2 direction. My main question is this: what kind of work will it take to get Diver Down in v3?

DD actually started out in v1, and the conversion to v2 took a long time because developing an actual full engine will do that. Of course, now I'm concerned with converting my existing code rather than redoing anything.

Also, there isn't much real reason to convert to v3 unless WinV2 won't support any of the following:
-working music :)
-hicolor, or at least multiple 256 color palettes at once
-AVI support

And just out of curiosity, is it likely that the v3 sound will behave just as weird as the Winv2 sound on my computer?

(gren, I tried to email you last night after having setup a sendmail server on my own computer because of stupid problems with verizon's. But, I still can't get mail to your @geocities.com email, and I seem to have lost your other addy)

Anyway, I dont really think I can suggest you convert DD to v3, except for the hicolor thing, but the effort of converting all your maps and VC at this point seem like a not-fun task.

I believe AVI support is really easy, for both v2 and v3. I'll check into it. Winv2 will not have hicolor, tho.

And, it's almost certain v3 sound will work the same way... Idunno man. I swear your computer is the ONLY one that has problem with winv2 sound. But I mentioned something about that in my not-sent email...

I'd rather put an alternative system into WinV2 than V3 anyway. I could put something like FMOD into winv2 and not lose any functionality. v3 has some really elite music features but they're all specific to mikmod, putting another api would break those features.

It's my reply to this and the last two emails I sent you about Winv2 issues, to add to your list :).

That would double the size of your game ;)

Or mpeg, or any compressed movie format. I'm trying to work on a spell system similar to grandia II, where the spell effects were done by layering a mpeg movie over the screen while shifting the camera. It looks REALLY cool, and I'd love for this to be in V3.

Another thing that would be nice is Mp3 support. I have some high quality music I've made in mp3 format, and I'd like to use it in my game. I'm sure that the decision to use .mods was because of the smaller size involved. Most of us have broadband, so that point is moot. I'm also wondering if more sound effects options are available for wave playback...Stereo waves and waves higher than 11025 would be awesome...

But I don't care if any of this comes to fruition. I just like the name Verge 3. :)

Not if I included lower-quality MP3s (even 56/44 or whatever the devil that quality is sounds reasonable)... and not if I only used one or two MP3s and the rest were S3Ms (i.e. if I wanted to have a "Melodies of Life" or "Eyes On Me" style theme song mixed in with my soundtrack -- which, BTW, I plan on doing if at all possible, and I already know the song, and it's not something illegal to use even, as it was composed and performed by a personal friend!)...
