I've read the document included in WinV1, that said V1w is PD, not crap GPL......
I just wonder what the WinV2's license will be
(WinV2.exe runtime, or WinV2 source)
Also I saw an old news on this site said some guy are
selling their Verge Game, is that legal?
But the previous V2DOS source was GPL, so I'm confused.
Currently I've no shareware project on Verge, I just
want to clearify what V2w will be (GPL / PD)?
Anyway Vecna is so cool! He made this wonderful engine.

The winverge(v1) source release is PUBLIC DOMAIN.. which means it's truly Free Software. You can use it with GPL code, you can use it without GPL code.
There is no winv2 source release, nor will there be. It can be not-GPL because it is a complete rewrite, there is no shared code from DOS V2.
Regarding selling verge games... I used to say verge was free for noncommercial use, but now I've stopped caring. If you want to sell a verge game, you're welcome to try. This applies to v1 and v2 .. (this does not necessarily apply to ika/v27)

Cool!
Vecna, thanks for your generousity,
So that seems WinV2 will be a "milestone" for the Verge
World, since there'll be only one unique "WinV2".
Sincerely hope Verge will become the most popular game engine :)

Why won't there be a source release? I think I have a pretty good guess but just want to make sure.

Because in the past it's proven more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.
The last two times I've tried to make windows ports of (v1, v2) I've run into this problem that there were these source releases and then numerous different splinter VERGEs out there. So, you want certain games to work in your new spiffed out windows port, but you either have to go and sort of re-port that specific version or just write off that game as a loss. That was more of a problem in V1, but in V2 it was still a problem. The short of it is, I want there to be ONE latest, official version of VERGE.

But, would you care if I tried a port of V2 (probably 2.6, still have yet to look at sources) to linux ? Not sure how many people would actually use it... but.. its still worth a shoot ^^.

... that such a situation simply would not come to pass so long as you are actively updating the engine. :)
All of the "splinter" versions of verge (both v1 and 2) that I'm aware of were released during a period in which the engine either wasn't being updated at all, (v1, while v2 was in dev) or very, slowly/quietly. (ie v2+i and v2k)
(I point this out merely because I personally consider closed-source freeware to be wasteful, not because I have any intentions of doing anything with winV2)

Too many versions may confuse the users......
So IMHO, closed source freeware is better.
A good example is GameMaker(by Mark Overmars),
There's only 1 GameMaker, no other variations.
The user who want to make a Verge clone can refer
to WinV1 or V26, or even DosV2.
For now, "VO" is also something very important.

Well, I personally consider "open source/free software" licenses such as the GPL to be something I have no interest in supporting. And these open source communities dont tend to regard PD source releases much higher than closed source if at all, I'll get no brownie points for doing PD source releases.
So uh. Yeah.
