Verge 1 - Made to create RPGs. It was very good at what it did, was very easy to use etc. However, vecna was still learning C when he wrote it (I think), so it was sort of buggy. Also, since V1 was made to create RPGs, it wasn't very flexible, and even making a battle system was very hard.
Verge 2 - This was designed for added flexibility, but also requires more coding. It is *very* flexible, and allows you to create almost any SNES game equivilent you can think of (bar 3d games like StarFox). There have been side scrollers written (Zeux World), RPGs, a missile command clone (Nuclear Defender), shooting games (Intense Flight), and probably more that I can't remember at the moment.
In short, V1 is made to create RPGs, is reletively easy to use, but a little inflexible. V2 is very flexible, but hard to grasp at first.
Hope this helps =)

Verge 1 was genius in it's simplicity. Any beginner to coding
should start with it. It takes a lot less work to create an
rpg with it because all the party/item/level code is
prewritten for you. this means that all verge 1 games look
pretty much the same. Of course, it isn't very flexible and
doesn't have a battle system.
Verge 2 buys flexibility and power at the cost of ease of use.
It is very complicated and takes a lot of time writing code
just to put images onscreen and pick up an item. Creating
a game with v2 takes a lot of dedication and coding knowledge-
and time.
I always suggest going with v1 for a while to get the basics down.
