Does anyone have any idea where I can get a copy of the Verge 2 IDE that's on the download page? Either the link is broken or the comps here don't like the page, so I can't get my grubby little hands on it.

The link is broken. I tried to get it myself long ago, but like you could not find it. I don't think you can find it anywhere.

JL

What would you expect the ideal Verge IDE to do?

The closest you can get to a VERGE2 IDE is some kind of a front-end. I dunno where you can fetch one, though... But I know that it MUST be one somewhere. Keep lookin'! :)

Well, if one were planning on designing an IDE. . . I suppose the interface would resemble RPG Maker 2000 by ASCII. If you have no idea what I'm talking about (though I'm sure you do), go to http://www.rpg2k.net (I think that's right) and download it. My picture has a similar format, though probably with the map window cut down to allow a coding window. . . something like that. And handy little buttons to bring up CHR editors and stuff, too! ^_^ Just a pipe dream, you say? Perhaps, perhaps. If I had the skill, though, I'd be more than happy to design one myself. Maybe I should consider trying to puzzle my way through the source code and learning something like Visual Basic to put it all together. I'd have no idea how to start, though. . . but now I'm just rambling. I hope that answers your question.

Verge or not, this is my idea for the ultimate game development IDE.

Rule number one: ONE PROGRAM.

The whole thing revolves around a main Project panel. The project shows all the resources (chr files, artwork, movies, sounds, music, maps, and scripts, and whatever else you have) that are loaded into the project.

You can double-click any resource to open/edit it. The IDE can be configured to load resources into external programs (like Photoshop) but there are internal editors for all major formats (i.e. a primitive image editor, a chr editor, tile editor, map editor, script editor...)

CHR and tile editors resemble ACE and TileEd. If it ain't broke, don't fix it :)

Map editor resembles WinMapEd but with more controls that aren't stuck in the menus (toolbars, buttons, hotkeys, stuff like that.) Layer views similar to PS (I know it's an abstract analogy, deal with it), and it would show the actual CHR instead of a box for entities.

Script editor has color-coding (like VEW) and auto-indent, and all that nifty stuff you expect in a C++ IDE (or Python's IDLE, for that matter.) There's also a context menu that gives you visual access to all the major builtin library commands, and a docked window displaying all the libraries the current script links to.

Think of the relationship between map editor and script editor as similar to that of UnrealEd and it's builtin UnrealScript interface.

That's my (very brief and nondescriptive) idea. It's not impossible to make, but we're all too lazy to try :) (including me)

That is all.

_CLIPs_

I made it a while ago, and you can dl and see screenshots of it here:

http://www.geocities.com/ecliptic2k/VBuild.htm

When downloading it follow all the instructions on the page. VBuild151.zip is the really buggy first version, but it needs to be installed inorder to run VBuild2Alpha.zip, the new better version.

I haven't worked on this at all in a while... Mostly because a lot of things are going to be changing in V2.7 (like the change from VC to Python). Well if you're using any version, except V2.7, this 'should' work fine =)

I took a look at the screenshots and stuff; looks pretty darn good. I will try it, once I manage to find a place where I can keep more than 10 megs of material on disk at a time.

You can get a copy at my site, http://www.vergearchive.freeurl.com/mike/

I have a static IP so anytime my computer is restarted I have to log onto the redirect site and change my IP address in it, so if the server is down, my computer is down or I forgot to start the server prog back up, if people would just email me I would make sure the server was running.
