what's the best image editor

i want to create and edit png files but photoshop screw up the alpha. corel photopaint can't even open them. Does paint shop pro open them correctly?

You sure that Corel Photo-Paint don't open them?? Cuz I have Corel Photo-Paint 7 and it opens this format. :/
(Maybe because you don't have the same version)

Photoshop is the best, hands-down. However, using the default PNG save routine doesn't work out the alpha channel... to do that, you have to go 'Save for Web' and check 'transparency'. And make sure you save it high-colour. I'm assuming you're using version 5 or later.

I use GIMP, because I'm a hippie GNUist, and a cheapskate in general. :D
It's the best you'll get for the price, (ie nothing) and it handles alpha without any problems.
