Over the last 3 weeks my computer's been reeling from a devastating crash of XP. I have gotten XP back up and running, but it's very laggy and there's nothing more I can really do to fix it. Being in Japan, I lack adequate technical support. There are plenty of people around me with the necessary skill, but they're not quite as proficient when they don't understand the native language of my OS.

Long story short, I've partitioned my harddrive so that half of it is now running Ubuntu.

Since I'd like to continue working on my game in an environment that actually functions well, I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers/help in how to go about getting Verge ported to Linux. I imagine the problems with this would be Verge's dependence on some windows/mac specific software. Perhaps it actually would be fairly easy. I don't know.

My own computer is down too. I have XP installed on it, but do have a little Linux experience. Once I get it working again, and install a copy of Linux, I'll be glad to help you out.

Also, it may be helpful to post the project at sourceforge.net.

I guess the first trick would be to get the source code and try to compile it in ubuntu, right? What windows dependecies does verge have that would have to be rewritten for linux?

I actually already DID port verge to linux. If you look around you can probably find it. I don't remember whether the site I was hosting it on is still around or not though... The port ran some of the verge games. Other games used modified engines and thus are not directly portable. (SHAME ON THEM!)

I actually did it off of the mac port. Now the mac port is better and I was going to redo my port but never did. :-(

Anyway, it shouldn't be too hard to get it up and running in linux again. But, what I'd like to see is the mac and linux ports merging together (after all, OSX has a BSD underbelly). This would remove the OSX cocoa interface but would make maintenance simpler. It would be really great if all three OS versions were one codebase but all of the windows stuff would have to be ported to QT or wxWidgets or something else cross platform. I still like this idea but some people won't because the linux and mac ports are a bit slower than the directx drawing in windows.
