Would it be possible to add some kind of visual editor for verge? or some kind of IDE like the one in RPG Maker XP? Would speed up the hell out of game making.

Sure, it's possible. But not very feasible considering that none of the developers has that much time on their hands, or would want to spend time on something as impractical as a brand spanking new IDE when there are already things out there capable of doing code editing.

I think Textpad is just fine. It's not as functional as a Visual Studio IDE, but Verge doesn't really need one that sophisticated. After all, those are developed by rather large teams of programmers and developers, and it's probably something we Verge developers can't mimic. Syntax coloring, easy indentation, and workspaces are all that I need. Autocomplete and compile-as-you-type (ala Eclipse) are useful but nowhere worth the effort for something done in peoples' spare time.

There are more important things, namely cross-platform resource editors. Maped3 is in much more need of replacement than Textpad, especially since it's written with C# and .NET, which is Windows-only. There is also VOpenCHR, which is open-sourced, but far too bug-ridden to use, I find.

These are much more useful, in my opinion. Nice suggestion, but I prefer my editors lightweight and already existant. :D

Unless I'm mistaken, I think relaxis is referring to a visual click together wysiwyg type of editor. Relaxis, if that's what you're looking for, why are you using Verge and not an RPG Maker?

He's interested in developing for the GP2X. RPGMaker is not an option.

Sadly, Relaxis, Verge is more of a DIY community. While simple tools would be nice, I don't really see anyone having the time to donate to such a service.

Jrhtee -
I'm not using RPG maker because it isn't compatible with the LINUX software for the GP2X. You can't access the source code to port it and in any case, it would be the least portable platform as the software compiles with RUBY. Not to mention also that games made using RPG maker lack the dynamics that games made with engines like VERGE have - this is because the systems are not customizable in RPG maker and the source code cannot be edited directly.

What I was talking about was creating a more function al and easy to use interface for VERGE - a WYSIWYG editor was an interface example - an interface like Visual Basic's editor wouldn't take hold of all the aspects and advantages of the VERGE engine - however a crossbreed of some kind would cut out hours of time spent re-checking code for things like text-boxes which could instead be drawn through the IDE.

On a last note - if I wanted to make lame games I wouldn't have spent $200 on reference and tutorial books on SDL, C++, game programming and design, when I could have just downloaded RPG maker and made shitty RPG's like the rest of the crowd.

About Maped3, the developement should move to make it Mono compilant (while still using .Net) (for those who don't know Mono is a open source cross-platform .NET framework. All the .NET standard classes are implemented yet, but you can run many applications. With Mono 1.13 (latest is 1.17) Maped3 (and Packed3) can be opened, but if you try to make a new file, it crashes. I haven't looked the error log (CLR, i love you) but it's probable they could be ported to Mono, or at least a Maped3 development branch (incluiding at least the most important stuff) can be made.

The Maped3 source is in SVN, right.
When I have a free day, I'll check this stuff.

A heads up, the Maped3 source in the SVN doesn't include its associated libraries: pr2common, zlib.net, and render. Also, the SVN is still shot (unless I haven't been filled in).

Some guy was actually working on a Verge IDE, although it seems none of you actually noticed.

It was called TriPViCE, the Third Party VC Editor. I think an early alpha build might be kicking around the downloads. It's not bad, but it needs a tonne of work.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
