It's bad form to post the same request three times. Even if the request is categorically ambiguous, the community isn't that big. No matter where you put it, it'll be seen by someone who can answer your question.
If you're having trouble figuring out chrmak, I would recommend using VOpenCHR instead. I think it's easier to use.

Assuming you're using XP, here's how I get CHRmak to work.
1. Put CHRMAK5.EXE and any source graphics and .MAK files in it's own folder.
2. Open up a command prompt and change directory to the folder that you just made*.
3. Execute CHRMAK5.EXE at the command prompt
4. Feed CHRMAK the Mak file it's looking for.
*The easiest way I know of doing this is to type 'cd ' then drag the chrmak5.exe onto the command prompt window, THEN "delete CHRmak5.exe" from the end of the line, leaving you with a command line like 'cd "<c:\whereever\the\hel\lthe\folder\is\" '. Press return.
An even easier method is probably just to make sure CHRMAK is in the command path.

Okay, VOpenCHR is the way to go. You can directly modify CHR files, you don't have to create MAK files or any of that. VOpenCHR has the option to import images, and lets you edit movescripts and see them work at the same time. Use it. http://vopenchr.sf.net/ for the win.

All of which reminds me: Is there an application that will let me create verge maps from pre-rendered images?
I'm not too fussed. I can do it the hard way if nessecary, but if there's one handy, I wouldn't say no.

I know there USED to be, at least, for Verge 1, then I think they made a similar program for verge 2... I think it was on the list of things for Maped3 to have built-in, but there's a long list of things there. XD
You might want to try searching for the Maped2 version (jpg2map? dunno), and then converting it to a maped3 map.
Does VOpenChar have the ability to manually line up sprites before saving them as a chr, to make sure the walks aren't jerky?

To be honest, that sounds about as much effort as the hard way.

THERE IS.
Aen's (I think) PSD -> MAP converter thingy.
But I remember experiencing problems with transparency. But don't take me wrong, it works.

As far as psdmap: My guess is you can't use alpha layers and probably need to make many layers of death magenta instead.

Never could get it to work. I think it's because Paintshop Pro seems to spit out PSD's that are PSD's in name only.
Death Magenta. Heh. That's way better that the name for the colour I used to hear "Magic Pink",
Death Magenta it is from now on.

My hope is that we'll one day have a magenta skin for this site. It would go with my Windows colour scheme!
