We have wanted a secondary server for quite some time now, to take some pressure off of good old xerxes.verge-rpg.com and let us do some things that we are not exactly free to do now. I am creating this thread for interested and informed parties to post ideas for what a new server could be used for that we can't do right now, and any other benefits that we might get from having another server to use.

For those who don't know, we are getting a fantastic hook-up on this machine and hosting service, but it is a constant source of stress/guilt to use this thing to the max without using it in ways/levels that hurt the people giving it to us.

All members of the verge community may have an interest in this: we have plans for the verge-rpg website to eventually develop a small amount of revenue production potential, with innovative extra services, etc., which would be re-invested into community services... and quite possibly, this new machine. So I have decided to open this up as a public discussion, because the new machine will certainly be used to host verge public services.

In summary: please post reasons for getting a new machine or ideas pertaining to new hardware. Hopefully this will help muster $$ support from the hardcore users (I don't think we want to just sell shell accounts to random bozos on the new machine)

It's home in the sense that we live in the ghetto, our neighbors on the left are drug dealers, and our neighbors on the right dont legally live there, and our fucking plumming is shot and the landlord is a group of annoying people who come in to fix the plumming, but blow a fuse and then leave.

Furries, actually. Our neighbors are furries and RO players and IJ.

Also I had thought that, distinct from how our current server is run, we would find a fanatical linux sysadmin who would, in exchange for free super-user level privileges, respond promptly and do whatever we asked in terms of setting up software and things. We can't really do that now because of how xerxes.verge-rpg.com is set up at someone else's grace... we have to keep strict control over how it is used. We would be more free to have successes with a wacky fanatical linux sysadmin... or failures.

I dunno if lore has time to be fanatical about it, or if he would MAKE time if he had a machine he could be more free with? what say you???

IJ is awesome. He responds to bullshit by becoming evil in a way that even zeromus can only emulate.

plz can I be an irc cop I wuz 1 when I was 13

I think it would be cool if it was tied to verge 3 in some way- maybe for certain games they could store stuff in a MYSQL database or something to keep people's stats, I dunno! High scores for games? Online multiplayer? Woo

If this was like 3 years ago i'd be all like TETRINET but i don't even know if that's around anymore! ;D

Maybe someone could make an eggdrop that hung out in the IRC channel and had some help stuff to it- almost like an online MS Word Paperclip... you hate it so much but once in a while it actually does help you.

I'll try to think of some more stuffs.

Peace out gents and broads!

I don't have the time and because of my linux software preferences, debian, specifically, installing the latest and greatest software is not always feasible. Besides that, I don't like installing the most recent software on a server like verge-rpg.com that gets accessed a lot, and, originally in it's very first incarnation that I did install more recent software on, was hacked within 48 hours of going up.

Despite the slow speed on getting updates and not always having all the software we want installed, since the first time it was hacked, I think we've had a fantastic uptime record. There's been a couple of hardware failures, and upgrades that have taken it down, but other than that, it's pretty much solid. A full year uptime is not uncommon for xerxes.

Regardless, I would be more than happy to run another server in the same manner I run this one. I don't think that's what you guys are looking for, though.

Depending on what we needed it for, I guess we could start running a more recent version of Debian (ie: untested), but that'd depend on what we'd be running on it and how public it would be. IRC server = scary, not only to me, but also to the hosting company the server is currently located at, and hosting companies in general. People get so worked up over IRC and who's in charge of what channel, they do stupid things and pretty soon the whole universe gets DOSed and things explode and I have to get up at 3 AM to fix it all and chances are I'd still be drunk so I'd trip on the server and break it and then we'd be fucked. Or something.

sabernet

I remember kissing IJ's buttocks to get him to allow me to connect again because he did a blanket ban on *!*@ns.sympatico.ca which, needless to say, blocked Nova-Scotia(not many ISPs in rural NS back then, much better now)

I never liked Espernet either.

You do that now anyway.

I'm personally fine with espernet. I don't think its really necessary to have an entire IRC server just for VERGE. We've got 2 channels already, must we be so greedy?

Heh... I do?

Oh yeah.. I guess I do.

Well, the difference is how often it'd happen. If we were running on irc server, it'd be like once a week.

Lore = king of emotes.

I just had to say that.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
Verge-rpg.com is a member of the lunarnet irc network, and would like to take this opportunity to remind you that regardless how babies taste, it is wrong to eat them.
