Sooo... a couple of years ago I discovered Diver Down. When it was posted at Home of the Underdogs, in fact. I loved it at the time, got to the final boss (I assume) and then...
Uh. Well, I gave up, for some reason. Probably due to being unable to beat it.

Whether due to nostalgia or the desire to play a good RPG once again, years down the line (...today) I decided I wanted to play Diver Down again.
Unfortunately, XP and/or my graphics card seem to hate the windows version of Diver Down with a passion. Running it normally results in just the upper-left corner of the screen displaying the game window, with the rest of the screen being filled with painful rapidly-moving black lines. It's probably my resolution, and there is an option to run anything in a 640 by 400 screen resolution...
But, again unfortunately, this computer doesn't seem to be able to display anything so low as that resolution, so I have the same problem. Is there any way of forcing Diver Down to run fullscreen?

winv2.cfg has a windowmode argument that should have a 0 next to it for fullscreen. That is the default btw and it runs fine for me in XP.

The resolution is 320x240.

I can't believe you got that far and gave up!

In retrospect, neither can I. I recall having problems, but it was years ago that I last played the game, so I really don't know why I gave up.
Hey, do you know the download links on the website aren't correct? The 'temp/' directory shouldn't be part of the address, I think? I mean, I had to cut it out when I was trying to pick up the game from the download section. I love the new design, though. Even if it's been around for a few years or I've forgotten it looked like that in the first place.

You're right. It is the default, set to fullscreen in winv2.cfg... which is why it's now even more confusing as to why it won't run fullscreen.
I just get this horror, instead:

...except you can't see the probably-epilepsy-inducing black flickering lines of doom.

My resolution doesn't go that low, unfortunately.

Yup, I'd guess your video card doesn't support that low of a resolution. I think I know a way around it. I believe eagle mode ups the resolution to 640x480. It does some smoothing so things don't look so old-school, but if you can run full screen then I'd say it's worth it.

In winv2.cfg, switch eagle from 0 to 1 and see what happens.

Also, if you switch windowmode to 1, you'll probably have a small window instead of some flickering madness. You could even try maximizing that and seeing what happens.

That works, and perfectly, to boot.

Thank you very much!
How is Verge for making games? I'm more of a RMXP person myself, but I seem to collect design stuffs and game engines.

Glad I could help!

I'm not really qualified to talk about verge anymore, though. We're up to v3 these days and even that has gone through iterations. I haven't touched verge in 5 years since I released Diver Down.

Wow! That was 5 years ago! Can't believe it!

Overkill

Verge 3 is, by far, much, much easier to use than Verge 2 which was what Diver Down worked with.

How?
* VergeC is a lot more improved, and the compiler's builtin to Verge, which means you don't have to go through extra hassle to compile THEN run the game like with vcc back in v2 days.
* Everything's high color (instead 256 color), and as a consequence we don't have weird things like trans.tbl or palettes anymore. This means more capability for cool effects and way more flexibility with art -- less worry overall.
* Maps, sprites and tilesets are more refined and flexible.
* Images aren't limited to pcx and gif anymore.
* Music can actually be high quality mp3s and ogg, if you choose. And it can play higher quality tracker music like Impulse Tracker files.

But at the same time, there's a lot of similarity between Verge 2 and Verge 3. And in fact, Maped3 can open verge 2 maps, so old designs are portable. And although VergeC code doesn't copy directly, it's intuitive to pick up and rewrite.

I'm not sure what you're up to nowadays, but personally, I think it'd be awesome if you released a remake of Diver Down with Verge 3 and even newer art and improved music!

A lot of instabilities with Verge that weren't the fault of Diver Down were fixed. And now with Verge 3, you could theoretically have Diver Down for Mac and Linux users too, which means an even bigger user coverage for your game!

I understand that you're likely busy with work or other things, but I think a rerelease of your game would probably be very successful, and it'd be the inspiration to get more people into using Verge, which is a wonderful game engine.

I mean I know you released a Verge 2 game with a full library called PURGE, but because Verge 3 came out shortly after Diver Down, this handy library was overlooked.

This is just Overkill ranting here, but let me know what you think!

Maybe just even trying to port over a short demo section of the game in Verge 3 (like maybe the portion size that was in the Verge 1 demo back in the day), and decide from that.

I think it's worth considering. :D

I couldn't convince him years ago :(

Maybe he's ripe for another try!

Hey Gren, I'm going down to LA for xmas. You gonna be in town? Wanna go out for drinks?

I have often wished I could rerelease Diver Down with redone art where needed and completely finished art cels. Late in the game some of my programmer art just got more and more horrible. Also, having more time to flesh out all the secrets and side quests would be great.

But it took 5 years to make that game. We're talking about a huge time commitment here. And getting consistent art help is no easy task. It's just not feasible to remake the game. At least not now. ;)

Grue, I went down to Miami for Christmas and am not going back to LA until January. I guess I'll just miss you.
