I'd have to say the old dynamic lighting engine worked a lot better. This one gives me 0 fps, it's so slow. It's almost less than 1 frame/10 seconds, with this lighting engine, I'd say.
Of course I have a really shitty computer, so that may well be the reason. But it may look good on someone's extreme high-end computer.

I haven't downloaded it yet (not something I can do at the moment), so I can't comment. But I just wanted to say that I made a tile-based dynamic lighting system back in V2 that used various types of black/transparent dithered tiles, very much like the lighting system used in Ultima 6. I haven't tried implementing it in V3, but I bet you could get a nice system using several different layers of varying translucency, and several different kinds of edge pieces for the shadow, it would look great and still run at a good pace.

I get 3fps on my Athlon64 3000.
I'd be curious to profile it and see if it could be sped up at all.
It'd also probably be a lot more tolerable at 320x240. Even if you do want to build a game at that res, it might be nice to see a demo build at that res so we could see the effect a bit smoother.

what old dynamic lighting engine? I wasnt aware there was one for verge... and if your refering to the duskbane one, that wasn't dynamic. And as for speeding it up, I did all I could to get a considerable speed up but nothing works unless I make things look really nasty. basicly I made it, realized it wasnt worth implementing into anything so I released it as simply something to have fun with.

Heh, oops, a mistake on my part. Now that I look at it, Duskbane definitely isn't dynamic. Oh well, good work, just wish it ran considerably faster, but that most likely won't happen.

You're drawing those angular shadows with those circular constructions you were talking about in help, right?
It's not worth it. Draw rougher polygons that shoot out at the correct angles. Using a ton of lines is not going to be efficiently done on this...EDIT: although you're right, sacrificing presentation for speed may not be worth it.
Although, it makes for very impressive screenshots. I too get a very minimal FPS.
Which, by the way, how does it actually run on yours, RageCage?
I seem to have lost a bit of faith in Line and Triangle. They don't seem to be as fast as I thought they were...

Heh, strangely enough, I get 0 fps on this thing with my PIII 600mhz. But it does look interesting.

yeah I get a max of 4 fps if I tweak the thing. after a lot of tweaking all I could ever get was 10 fps but at that point it was awful.

I'm getting 2fps. But well done Rage, that's some nice line of sight goodness, just like in Nox.

It does look nice, but I have to agree with everyone else that it's the slowiest bunch of slows that ever slowed.

Zaril clearly has a computer that's main CPU is in fact the disembodied brains of Japanese computer programmers in a huge tank.

His tank of Japanese brains must run at around 5ghz... I wonder how I would go about obtaining some of those?
Aha! This is how!

Is this anything at all like the dynamic lighting that was used in Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen? That game probably had one of the best 2d lighting systems ever.

never played it. I just got the idea from a gamedev.net article. Their method is nothing like mine though.

Nah, just a 3ghz, 800mhz bus. I had it run in 320x240 fullscreen mode. :)

The screen res would have helped, then. Cheat!
