I've completed a public demo of Dawnshadow, the game I've been working on. After a lifetime of half-hearted service to the god of darkness and monsters, Sai wakes up to find himself spirited away to the Eternal Nightmare's own realm.

Dawnshadow is styled after the old Dragon Warrior games. The first area is largely complete and enough systems are in place to make it feel solid. It's still not as clean as I'd like, but it's to the point where it needs eyes not mine on it to catch those things I cannot. I estimate 30 - 60 minutes of play time will clear all developed content. The current, tentative plan is to have it finished by late this year.

I tried to upload it and a gallery here, but... well, there's something comfortingly familiar about those things that never change. Until that's all straightened out, you can grab a copy from Dropbox here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/52g1ucp36vzomc7/eosds.zip?dl=0 (Use the Download link at the upper right to grab the whole zip file.)

WARNING: There's a bug I can't track down that occasionally destroys the standard autosaves. You can force a hard save by sleeping in a bed or trying to open the (non-existent) Records section of the journal.

Admittedly I did not play the entirety, but I will say that from what I did play this overall feels very polished. The GUI is pretty unique and with the NES style chip tunes playing in the background, it kind of gives me a Deja Vu/Uninvited vibe. Not really sure why, because it's a completely different style of game, but that's what I thought of!

I enjoyed the crafting system and the battle system certainly feels well thought out with the different combinations of weapons and skills.

It's a pretty difficult game. I was dying a lot, and basically if that shackle fails on that first raptor and you're low level, you're dead. Perhaps increasing the drop rate on "Hide" so that you can make more Bandages, or lowering the MP cost of Second Wind would help with that.

I would also recommend maybe including a readme file to explain the controls. I wasn't using a Game pad so the in game cues of "A, B, Y and X" didn't really help me at all. But being an old vet of the Verge scene I remembered our standard keys and was able to figure it out.

Overall though, like I said, I can see the amount of time and effort put into this. It does feel really polished, the battle system, menu's etc. are all well laid out and executed very well.

Keep it up :)

Thanks, Rysen. It's really useful getting outside feedback on this finally. I suspected the early game might be more difficult than it probably should be. And healing just needs rebalanced across the board.

It's odd about the button cues, though. It should show keyboard cues if Verge doesn't detect a gamepad. Either way, that's good to know. I'll put a toggle in to let the player force one or the other.

Thanks again. It's always nice to hear from the old guard.

Holy shit. I remembered my password and managed to log-in.

Great job on this. The UI looks very polished. I managed to play long enough to meet the Eldritch One. Keep it up! :)

Ahh, I didn't even think of that. I DO have a Gamepad plugged in at the moment, so your code is probably working as it should. But, having the option to choose might be a good idea any way.

Cheers!
