can verge execute an external exe? I was wondering if I could use it as a shell replacement for a home theatre system I'm building:P

I know it's a bit outta what the big V is intended for, but I figure I'd ask;P

actually, this could be useful in creating FMVs, a bink .exe high def video file could be executed to provide a good FMV w/o relying on cinepak

hmm, I suppose there's no reason it couldn't.
although I dont think our community is big enough to have to worry about security concerns too much now, I'd probably have some pop up dialog at startup notifying that the app is requesting to be able to execute arbitrary stuff.

in the spirit of things, one could code a Verge virus and call it Tarkuss' Revenge ;)

Without cinepak? We can make Verge movies with Cinepak? Like on Saturn...?

Omni, would you like to share your cryptic-talk with the rest of the class?

Er....Cinepak = software video compression scheme, commonly used in the Saturn since it lacks on-board MPEG hardware decompression (which is why PSX videos look so much better.)

Of course, Cinepak can be done quite well to achieve good quality video. But the question is--did I read above that we could play Verge videos with it?

And I quote sabernet.

See? That implies that we could make a Verge video with Cinepak. I'm just asking if we really can, or if I misread that.

cinepak is a codec that runs by default on all windows 9x, NT builds. Verge appears(devvers, correct me), to run avi files using window's built-in codecs so Cinepak and Indio and MS RLE and "shudder" uncompressed would work.

Huh. I had no clue Cinepak was Windows-supported.

indeedy-do

for video demo reels, it's recommended alongside indeo for compatibility, although it does have some nasty color banding issues

I HATE Indeo with a passion, stemming all the way back to 1995. Indeo must die, and Cinepak along with it. And anyone that would honestly "compress" a high-color video with MS RLE must die too.

Die I say! Must have divx.

it's true that they all stink quality wise(although indeo 5 ain't that bad). Cinepak handle color gradients rather poorly and Indeo archives pretty bad.

However, one thing both of those offer that divx does not, seamless scrub. Going back and forth in a divx is awkward as MPEG compression doesn't have frames in the litteral sense

If VERGE is going to execute EXE files, would it then be wise to restrict this to EXEs within VERGE's folder? Just a thought.

[edit: Come to think of it, this is probably a joke that has gone around eversince the advent of the Tarkuss Bug... man... that was way back in the V1 days.]

Wasn't that a planned/suggested feature in VO, too? I seem to remember something about that :p

goes to show you, if a bug gets enough notoriety, it's spirit never gets "Fixed":P
