Hello helpful Verge people who know very much more about things like this than I do,

I am not the best game-player in the world. Indeed, I may be the worst. But I love these types (RPG) of games. And I very much enjoy the darkness of and lo-tech looking, easy on my ancient computer's resources game of "Diver Down".

But, I'm stuck in something that is supposed to be straight-forward. And it's been asked about before, and answered, but I'm still stuck. I don't know if I am doing something terribly wrong, or maybe I've managed to hit a bug of some kind. (Bug is doubtful, as the game has been about for ages, and I think Grenideer has solved them all, yes?)

I'm in the first Guard's maze. I have now been trying to get through it for seven hours.

I am, apparently, a complete moron. I admit utter defeat. I called in sick to work in frustration... Add complete loser to complete moron.

After not being successful with abiding by the "the way the guard is facing is the way you cannot go" rules, and dying, I have worked grid-wise across every possible route (nay, clearly I have missed one!) and have not yet found a way past the second column of beds.

The only way that seems possible is blocked by two boxes. Please, someone help a girl out, here. I'm lost, but I want to play the rest of the game! If you'd rather not post the answer publicly, please feel free to email me: bombshell at bluebottle dot com.

Eternal gratitude and obsequiousnesses to whomever saves my sorry ass,

Xanthine.

heh heh I never understand how this puzzle is so hard. Of course I made it so it might be more obvious to me, but guards can only face up down left or right. Just don't go that way if they are facing you.

Hmm, what else could be tripping you up? If they are facing you, you can still pass that way if you walk behind something - in between plants or something like that. Also, you can walk thru an empty bed if you need - I don't think I required that for progression but maybe it got you extra armor.

I really don't know what else to say. We should post a screen cap of that room on this site somewhere with a line drawn showing the path to take. Post a screen if you like ;).

Let me know if you have specific questions or still can't get it. Thanks for playing!

Thank you for replying, Grenideer!

But yes, I am still stuck. The theory of the puzzle make perfect sense to me, but no matter what way I go, the guards wake up. I haven't tried walking through a bed before, maybe that will help.

I'd be grateful if you could tell me which way to go to get past the second column of beds. I'll gladly post a screenshot but, um... I'm a total computer novice, and have no idea how to do that. I'm using Windows 98 (I know, I know, I have Se, XP, and Vista but I'm scared to install them).

Thank you again for your help, and thank you for making and supporting such a fun free game. (And it's nice that it's not too easy. I like that.)

You could CTRL+PrintScreen ( or maybe just PrintScreen) and you'll copy your entire desktop. If you open up photoshop and select File->New, it will open a new image with the size of your clipboard picture. Then just paste into the new image and there's your screenshot! It's easier said than done if you haven't done this stuff before or don't have photoshop. Does anyone have a screenshot of this room or can help her out?

You need to keep playing even though it's a little hard now because the coolest cinema scene in the game is coming up in a bit. Unfortunately there's a cave dungeon ahead which is a little hard. Trust me tho, once you get to Act 2 the game isn't so unforgiving on you.

But oh, the puzzle is flawed. There is/ are one or two guards who have been drawn incorrectly, so they face the wrong way compared to their programmed line of sight. Also, it is rather arbitrary if they wake up or not, as the line of sight doesn't restrict itself to a straight, one-cell line, but goes a bit all over the place sometimes.

Spoiler alert >>> (Also, REALLY being too lazy to find/ create bug topic; try entering secret sigil tunnel in Twilight district again after defeating Bester. Ew.) <<< Spoiler alert

ya the line of sight is 3 tiles wide and doesn't go forever. If the guard is off the screen then he can't see you for the most part, but don't try to prove me wrong by going offscreen by just 1 tile. Keep a safe distance.
