So I realized a little bit ago that we are officially into year four of Gruedorf. Our third anniversary, as it were, was in October; the first post detailing the whole Gruedorf experiment went up on October 14th, 2007: http://verge-rpg.com/news/the-gruedorf-challenge/

It's been a lot of fun so far! Sadly, so far, no one has actually finished... anything. The closest we've got is Grue started talking about updating the Verge site two years ago (ish) and he recently launched that. Looks like he's still doing lots of bug fixes. But hey! At least he's close to finishing something.

Personally, it's been a bit of a bust, really. Real life has been somewhat turbulent over the last three years but when is it not? Geas is still not done, but it's not dead.

The last month or so has seen a resurgence of activity. Maybe that isn't the right word, but it's something like: Grue, myself, and Eldritch have all been back on the bandwagon for several posts now. Everyone else, sadly, is pretty much dead.

Are any of the former Gruedorfers still hanging around; have you considered jumping back on? How about any new people out there, who have maybe heard of Gruedorf (or maybe they haven't) but are looking for a format in which to get work done and get feedback on a weekly basis? Now is a good time! Joining is simple: choose a project, get yourself a blog, set up a favicon, let us know, and then start posting every week about your progress!

Here's to Gruedorf. Long may we not-fail.

I'll drink to that. You know, something non-alcoholic if such things exist around here. And has it really been three years?

...really?

That's simultaneously really, really depressing and really rather comforting. I've done a lot. I just haven't finished anything. But that was never the point of the endeavor, was it? Finishing something wouldn't actually change your status to the Gruedorf clock; you just have to keep going. And I'd like to think I've accomplished that, at least.

Even if, you know, I've taken every summer off for the past three years. Whatever.

Here's to Gruedorf. Let's keep going.

Well that's interesting. The fancy new gravitars seem to have eaten my dragon. I hope he was tasty.

Yeah, all the avatars from the old site are no longer displayed, but you can actually set your image on gravatar instead of having a randomized image, if you go to their website. Just go to http://gravatar.com and create an account. I think all they need is your email, and that's how it can automatically pull up an avatar on some blogs (and this forum) and stuff.

They seem to be reputable, I registered for them once about a year ago and haven't had any other emails other than an account activation.

They're used by a few big sites too, like github.

Oh and how about that gruedorf thing. I need to get back on that.

<kildorf> gruuuuuuuuuuue
<kildorf> why haven't you posted yet
<kildorf> and when are you going to post stuff that isn't about working on v-rpg D:
<grue> when vrpg is done.
<kildorf> :(
<grue> Also I have 1.5 days left.
<kildorf> :[
<grue> And I already have many hours of work logged.
<kildorf> you could post eraly!
<grue> I want to finish the happy shiny part of the galleries first.
<kildorf> ... early
<kildorf> okay :|
<Etir> Isn't posting early bad
<grue> why?
<grue> It minimizes laziness.
<Etir> or is it "any time this week" not "within seven days of last post"
<grue> the counter resets when you post.
<Etir> Posting early is bad then.
<grue> No.
<grue> It is only bad if you're trying to do the absolute minimum.
<kildorf> yeah.
<kildorf> I would LIKE to get myself posting 2x weekly
<Etir> You can build a buffer this way and take a vacation without losing, then!
<kildorf> on the weekend and in the middle of the day
<kildorf> ... Gruedorf is what I do ON my vacation
<Etir> D:
<Etir> My plan, foiled

Wow. Re-reading that, I'd like to say that in my defense I was pretty tired.

Clearly.

Hiya!
I'm still here! :)
It's been a while since I've updated my gruedorf entry, but some progress have been made since.

All the backend is coded and all that's left is to make some more maps.

But god do I hate making maps.

Here is what I do each time I want to make/update one.

I have problems with maped in windows 7 (even after a patch I got in another thread), so I have to use a VM with windows XP on it.
So:
1. Draw the tiles and assemble a map with layers with Graphics Gale (Works better than photoshop for pixel drawing IMO)
2. Copy each layer into a PSD layer using copy paste into photoshop
3. Use the psd2map application to make a .map
4. Open it with maped in the WinXP VM and add entities, obstructions and events.
5. try it in the game.
6. It's not perfect? Then I have to start again from #1 :(

You can imagine doing so is boring and tedious.
So that's what keeping me away from my game so far in the last year hehehe.

Here is my gruedorf entry, for posterity's sake:

ErayMan, This is the biggest area for improvement we have.

Mapediting used to be the core aspect of making a verge game. The process used to be game-like and satisfying in of itself.

"A better way to create maps" is the next thing on my list, for sure.

Have you tried this thread? I am running Windows 7 64-bit and this new build of maped works just fine for me. Really need to release a new Verge 3.2 version with the new maped.

But yeah, that patch I made worked on some versions of maped, but not others, so it wasn't that useful I found out, when I actually moved to a 64-bit machine. You should just grab the latest build instead from that thread.

Then you should hopefully be okay without a Windows XP VM.

Could you do that tonight? The front page could use a new post.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
