I crave competition, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone!
We need to revive the old tradition of themed compos with deadlines! And what better than a nice Winter competition when people have less to do?
So I propose we have compo with a Winter theme. But with a few twists.
We should
encourage usage of the new features in Verge! This way they 1) get better tested 2) have people using them which is why a feature should be in there in the first place!
I figure anything between now and 2005 could be considered a "new" feature, because there's a lot of stuff that's actually been there, but has no concrete examples, only documentation in the Verge manual.
And I don't consider updates to VergeC's compiler a "feature", so usage of nested structs, pointing out you can CallFunction with arguments now (and yes these are in there) aren't really fresh things.
I would, however, consider stuff like text wrapping for textboxes, or entity triggers a feature. How about m
I'd also consider LuaVerge a new feature. And a feature people should hop onto.
But I figure mandating people use new features is a bad way to go about it. So how about
encouragement in the form of bonuses? I'd say the best way to go about judging something like that would be to get the contestants to point out what new things they use and it keeps everyone's lives easier. No code review unless pointed to.
I'd say another thing this needs is
at least 3 distinct locations. This encourages a bit of exploration and interaction in the game. And it makes you get creative! :D
The game should have some form of
battle system or combat! This may be as detailed or obscure as you want, just some form of "combat". And if old compos and personal experience tell me anything, it's better to have a completed, yet simple system than an unfinished overambitious one.
I'd say
if you don't like combat, then puzzles in some form are a good substitute, and
bonuses for having both in your game.
Puzzles or combat could both be assessed on originality, fun, polish, and challenge. Hectic combat and difficult puzzles are only fun if you understand what you're doing :D
Condensed Summary- Winter themed game
- Needs at least 3 distinct areas
- Needs some form of clever combat or puzzles (bonus for having both)
- Use of new Verge features is rewarded.
EDIT: This was originally an unfinished sentence in my post, but I can now see this was FATE.
How about m
- Game must also somehow feature the letter M. Maybe as the starting letter of the game theme or a character name... Maybe as something much more. Your creativity using this letter in your game is judged. Mmmmmmmm...
