How about another compo?

If you were around then, you may remember the 3-week 2003 christmas compo we hosted over at ikagames.com (now ika.sf.net if you didn't know)

Well, a big VERGE compo is good and all, but honestly, the turnout was less than what I expected, although there were some very good entries. If you remember the xmas compo, you may remember that there were tons of entries, and it was probably because we didn't put a limit on which engine you could use.

We're thinking about doing the same thing again now. It would probably last 2 to 3 weeks and start August 1. Please respond to this message if you're interested. If there's enough interest, a page will go up on the ika site.

(A similar message is posted on the official ika forum)

I believe there was a consensus from all of the participants of the HOV that ended (that I'm still waiting on judgements for (ahem)) that they wanted a bit of a break.

Also, I don't remember the winter compo being all that big, really... I only remember 5-7 entries. Am I incorrect here?

Thrasher

My mistake. That was TomT64's. And 8 games came in.

I'm thinking of the one before that that we did host. 10 games came in. There's no page for it, but anyway. It was mega successful.

Edit: It's the one zara made shippu for.

I think the next compo we have should be a verge olympics type compo. Although I agree a little break would be nice, but not too long. Maybe 2 or 3 weeks?

I haven't really been too involved in the verge community recently, but another compo sounds good to me. I'm not for starting it immediately though. Two weeks sound like a good time to start. (At least one week.)

Ugh... Also. I may want to be on a team this time rather than going it solo. (Which I have come to discover doesn't work out all that well.) So if anyone out there wants me on their team drop me an email.

Also RageCage: what do you mean by VERGE Olympics?

Verge Olympic stuff is not as fun as ordinary compos in my opinion.

Athocreft: Last time it was done (a Verge Olympic event) you had people competing in the different areas in game creation. You had art competitions, music competitions and so forth. Normally it just tells us what we already know, who's 1337 and who's not.

Ah. I see. Thanks for the info, zaril.

It does indeed seem as though regular compos would be more fun... hmm. Methinks variety might be nice, however.

The thing I like about HoVs way more than Verge Olympics is that in HoVs I have something to do, whereas in Verge Olympics I don't. :D

What? There was a story/script category in the last one, no?

PS,
You didn't do very much in the HoV anywayHAHAHA;_;_;

Yeah, except for a lot!

Really..? So you did all the scripting and stuff and did lots of work before the deadline? Oh...no...no wait, that was me. What did you do anyway, except write our story and come up with the idea for our game? ...oh...

athocreft

Yeah. I agree with you Toen. I'm more into the story/scripting. I'm just saying that it would be nice to try out some new things. Couldn't hurt, could it?

TomT64

Well I would like another compo. If ika.sf.net can't or won't host it, I can and will. Also, 8 games vs 10 games is pretty good, and if you remember, I asked for RPGs and got at least a few. THey were good. Especially "Winter". I would love to have a compo JUST LIKE THAT again, where the turnout was decent and there were RPGs. To my knowledge, the ikagames one didn't have any RPGs.

People who like ika and verge but find verge daunting to use, or have been busy, might welcome a multi engine compo. August may or may not be too soon, but then how would we fit 3 weeks in for all the people going back to school.

So, Thrasher, if you need support, you've got it. I would be glad to host it, and if it comes to that, you tell me if you want to judge. Everything's ready for another compo whenever you guys want with whatever rules we can agree on.

You were the gruntwork monkeyboy that happened to have the most free time! Now we will have a discussion of pie holes and things we can shove into them.

I submit that the next HoV should not in fact take place while I'm in the middle of a 5k mile move. GRUE BITCH. You deprived me of yet another zeromus/bob failure ;_;
