I am currently writing a library for Japanese language in Verge. It will rely on using the # character as the escape character. This library will be capable of taking a formatted string and printing from it a mix of English, Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

#eng will set the current font at English (loaded from a regular font used in any verge game). At this setting, you just type regular text, except you have to use '_' for spaces.

#hir will set the current font to hiragana (loaded from a source image file that, like the english font, must be in a correct order. These (and katakana) must be typed as separate syllables, i.e. 'ni ho n go'. They will be printed on screen with no spaces.

#kat will set the current font to katakana (loaded like the hiragana set).

#kan will set the current font to kanji (loaded from a file where the kanji can be in any order). These are simply referenced by number according to the order they were loaded in.

So as an example, the string:
'#kat su mi su #eng :_ #hir ko re ha #kan 0 1 2 #hir no #eng VERGE #hir de su .'

would output:
スミス: これは日本語のVERGEです。

Yep, it is something that will take a lot of work, and no one will ever use it!

Hey, if you at least learn something through it, it's never a waste of time. And when a community receives someone's work, who knows how it could possibly be utilized. Now someone could make Japanese games with optional English subtitles! :D

Now all we need is somebody mad enough to do the chinese language. It would have two escape sequences, one for traditional, and one for simplified....

Oh come on, 5000 letters isn't too much. Well, to tell the truth, we just use about 1000 of them, and you could use the escape sequences for just the common ones, limiting it to maybe 100?

Still, not impossible, but as crazy as I am, I am not crazy enough to do something like that.

Ah, okay, I have heard of that... You are saying that Verge supports Unicode? And if so, how would I access a Unicode library in Verge (is it a specific file that all the characters are stored in?)?

I'm unlikely to switch if only because I've already gotten started on the way I had planned. ;-) I already have hiragana fully working, and the functionality for kanji support is there (that's the easiest part, though). I only have left to add in katakana, and the ability to display regular english text in the same message.

Er...well, I'll assume I'm partially wrong, just so I can ask: what does Unicode have to do with RPG Maker?

From what I can see, you're the first to mention TrueType. I think the discussion was headed that way or towards making some alternative font mechanism for supporting Unicode. The only reason Unicode came up, I think, is because it would simplify the work for Asian-language users.
That is, it would open up the Crazy asian market. CrazyAznGamer would notice many colleagues with serialnumbers ('CrazyAznGamer[1..1e6]').
