Did you actually play Wind Waker, Fox?
When I first saw screenshots for the game, I thought it looked really stupid. Stills really don't do the style justice. I played the game. Then I kept playing it, until I beat it. It has style and pretty oozing out of its pores.
It's cartoony. It's about animation. Pause a well-done animated film sometime and see how goofy everything looks.

.swf support has been suggested before, but don't expect it to happen. Even aside from it being a proprietary format, it's a little silly to have support for a full-on animation and scripting library inside of a full-on game library. It's a little redundant, don't you think? ;)
As for animated .gifs... well. The same argument doesn't apply, because .gifs are not scripted but... why? Is there really any compelling reason to use an animated gif when you could just do the animation yourself?
I think it's more likely that we'll get support for real movie formats. But even that, I wouldn't hold my breath, if I were you.

Sorry for the delay on this, been kinda out of it the past few days and didn't want to type a response to this thread while the world was spinning. @_@
No, I haven't played Wind Waker. I haven't played any of the 3D Zelda games beyond the 5 minutes I spent on Zelda 64- I just don't like the gameplay.
I've seen WW in motion, the animation is fluid, has good weighting and it's cel shader is one of the best (if not the best) to date, but the character models were absolutely shameful. There were plenty of tasteful cartoon styles that could have been used, but they chose not to use them. :^/
